View Full Version : So Jim Philips of ACC says no rush to expand playoffs

Because players don?t like the additional games.

Greg Sankey responds by saying too many plays in existing games. Need expanded playoffs. Can offset extra games by changing rules to adjust to fewer clock stoppages and fewer plays per game meaning less plays per game would offset more games for the 8 teams that participate past 13 games.

Thoughts?

That didn't stop them from going from an 11 game schedule to a 12 a few years back. I'm sure players not in the playoffs would love to play an extra game or 2 to be in the playoffs. I'd love to hear from the players of those teams ranked 5-12 instead of a dude who went to college in the 80s telling us what those players want.

I predict a change in power in the ACC soon.

I predict the ACC falling apart the second the GOR expires (or is rendered null and void). The SEC and Big 10 see a lot of valuable programs in there.

Sankey's response to more games is not to end the conference title games or eliminate the 1 soft, wasteful game that every team plays....his response is to fundamentally change the college game. I don't like this at all. I like that college has more plays.

Agreed. Because less games means less money. And that's all he's worried about

Something that college football fans have not taken into consideration is the NFL. The NFL will make sure that they dominate the cherished time slots for commercial money. The NFL has expanded its season and playoff format which means incursions into the college football premium advertising slots. If there is an evolution of conflict with the NFL, the Stan Kronkes’ of the world will go to the college football jugular to sustain dominance. Upon its discretion, the NFL has left Saturday time slots open for college football. If college football thinks that the NFL will not change course if there is a college football expansion into NFL slots, college football will get a big beat down?

In a saturated market, the NFL will crush college football for monetary benefits because they are ruthless businessmen in a ruthless business. Simply, big fish eat little fish. An expanded play-off in college football without the quality play-off product could be very counterproductive from a monetary position.

If college football players forego post season play to prepare for the draft, a play-off game or bowl game will not sway that decision one way or the other. What happens when the stars forego post season play and post season games become devalued? This will not happen in the NFL but will happen to college football. The quality of the regular season and not the proposed play-off will sustain college football

when you allow people who are only concerned about maximizing profits to make the rules, you get bad rules.

Who put that ACC ***** in charge of anything.

Phillips noted that he enquired from the Clemson players who had played multiple 14 and/or 15 game seasons and they sited burnout and injury concerns. I guess that is why they decided not to participate in this years playoffs and why the rest of the ACC saw no need to compete for a playoff birth😎

The ACC doesn't want expansion because they don't want the SEC poaching their teams.

With a 12 team playoff, Clemson, North Carolina, etc become much more likely to flip

They were in favor of 8 team playoff with automatic qualifiers. That produces a watered down playoff and promotes the non-SEC leagues. SEC would only be able to get 2 teams in which the SEC already does at 4.

Every conference and everyone involved is only concerned about their agenda. And what's best for themselves. The number 1 priority should be what's best for college football, college football fans and the student athletes.

I?d bet the nfl would like a list of these players who cited burnout, while playing extra championship and championship qualifying games. Real gamer and winner mentality there. I?d probably give both nuts to get an opportunity for a national championship. Holy shit people are soft.

Yeah, it almost has to be false. If players are burned out after playing a 15-game season and just can't go to 16 or 17, they probably won't be able to handle the NFL.

Burnout at a college age might be a thing if you were playing extra meaningless games, since previously you could not get paid legally. But playing extra games for a chance to do something few others ever get a chance to do shouldn?t cause burning in a winner. Makes zero sense unless they are soft. Might explain why the ACC sucks and is so soft. Maybe they need some little blue pills.

Consider another burnout which is the television viewers. When the football market gets saturated, the NFL will prevail. During the big money advertising slots the viewers will watch live NFL over DVR college football. The networks understand that there is ONLY ad revenue during live viewership thus big money ad slots.

Viewers watching college football on DVR are worthless for ad money generating; just fast forward past them. College Football needs to generate its money with live viewership. The big money will be generated with more quality games during the regular season in non-competing NFL ad slots.

Another problem for both NFL and College Football is the decrease of live television viewership across the board. Many are watching streaming services which devalues ad revenues. Streaming services provide family options where one pays monthly and incorporates others on the plan.

A college football expanded playoff could have games relegated to bad ad time slots due to NFL dominance so why not have more quality games in quality advertising slots during the season? I believe that a pathway to generating more revenue for college football is getting rid of bad non-conference games with great product to generate advertising revenue. College Football will always loose to the NFL.

How do you get conferences to work in the sport's best interest?

A commissioner or a board.

How many classes a day does an NFL player have to go to? What other requirements do they have to meet besides playing football?

I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you, just throwing something out there that I haven’t seen yet.
