With regards to Salty... here are some doors we opened...

Circa 2013
Masses: We want the HUNH!
MDL: Is this what we want football to be?
Masses: Yes! Quit whining! The Dynasty is dead!
MDL: Eh kay.

Circa 2014
Masses: We want to increase the championship to 4 teams!
MDL: Want that devalue some of the bowls?
Masses: No! We need more parity. Ole Miss kicked your ass... now the dynasty is really, really dead!
MDL: Eh kay.

Circa 2020
Masses: We want players to get paid & be able to transfer!
MDL: Don't you think that'd help the better teams?
Masses: No! Quit bitchin'!
MDL: Eh kay.

Circa 2021
Masses: We want to expand the playoffs!
MDL: Won't that further diminish the regular season and the bowls... and be a further benefit to the bluebloods?
Masses: No! We need even MORE PARITY!!!
MDL: Eh kay.

Players go where the money is: The more things change, the more things stay the same.

Kiffy probably wouldn't be that opinionated on the subject if Miami, or UF, or Oregon, or LSU, etc. etc. wanted him to coach there.

But, make no mistake, he is 100% correct.

Let's get this straight, so when a kid with no money goes to the school that pays him the most, that's bad for the sport. But when you, Lane Kiffin, who have already made tens of millions of dollars, change schools to go to one that pays more, that's fine?

It's hypocritical to say the least

He is right but you can only have so many on your roster. It changes nothing. The big boys are going to get the same guys they got before.

There are reasons professional sports have salary caps. Coaches are separate issues. If the money options are equal then the players can make their decisions based on more important reasons like proximity to home and the coaches they feel most comfortable with. Not to mention the best academic options best suited for individual needs.

Academic options seems to be out the window these days as everybody is expected to recruit and sign the best pro prospect money can get! Education? Nah, that went out the window years ago!

100% correct. The players are employees now, they should and will optimize economics like everybody else does.

They've been going where they get paid the most. Hardly anything has changed. If anything it seems to be bringing more parity to the sport than less.

With NIL, are straight cash payments still illegal? Has "amateur status" been removed from the rule book?

Going where you get paid the most sounds like a description of capitalism and what these young men will be doing for the rest of their lives. It sounds like what Kiffin and all the other coaches do. It sounds like what I do and what I will want my sons to do. I?m not hearing anything wrong with going where you get paid the most.

But.... this is where the NCAA could have better managed the whole thing without the edict from the Supreme Court. 10 years ago!

Mandatory stipend for every athlete, regardless of sport or level of success. Say starting then, at $200 per week, with yearly increases by 5%.
They would be at about $340 a week now.

Bama and Mississippi State would be paying every student athlete the same stipend, but by virtue of having 4 more athletic programs, Bama would actually have a bigger payout.

But....:. The NCAA would also have to hire dozens more investigators to police the continued under the table payouts, and put more teeth into the punishment for violators.

That would have also gotten where we need to be at about 75-80 D1 programs, who could afford to do that.

But alas, the NCAA and the School administrations stonewalled so long that they left themselves open to what we have now. About 50 athletes who can command 6 figure NIL agreements, another 500 or so who can get mid 5 figure agreements and the rest still scratching for a few bucks to go on a couple of dates each week.
