My Dad went to the game last night, and I just discussed the game with him. He said that Sobiesk came out to warm up before the second half started, and he missed 6 straight field goals from inside 40 yards. Did anyone else see this? What in the name of Morten Anderson is going on with our Special Teams?

It's painfully clear to me that Dan needs to hire a special teams coach, and he needs to focus on offense. Both of those units need a lot more coaching, so him having to split time between the two isn't helping either unit. I know you can't teach a kicker to make them, but there's a lot more than just kicking issues.

Not wanting to make this a Mullen thread....just wondering how we can improve this kicking situation. Any chance it suddenly clicks with Bell or Sobiesk? Or with kickers, are we basically in a "Next man up" type of situation?

I would just about give 2 scollys for a sure thing from 45 in.

Not only do we lose the points it drains the juice from the whole, players, coaches and fans.

Was the kickoff with the wind that hardly got off the ground by design?

Yea, I really think we need to start looking in the MS private school ranks. I know we got Mordecai redshirting from JA, but he is a punter I believe. How in the hell we missed out on Swayze Waters from Prep a few years back is beyond me. Dude absolutely lit it up at UAB over his career. Then you have guys like Gostkowski from Madison Central that go to Memphis. We have got to find a damn field goal kicker. This shit is getting embarrassing.

Been thinking about this as well Cadaver, and think we need to do one of two things:

1. Recruit good JUCO kickers that have already done it, but may be less talented.

2. Recruit high school kickers that have an extreme amount of confidence. Look no further than the way Bell introduces himself on the Jumbo tron to realize the problem. Obviously a very shy guy that lacks presence and confidence.

Once again Shotgun you nailed it with precision. You pretty much stated the 2 most Fn obvious options that any college looks for in recruiting kickers. You absolutely know what you are talking about. Shit why didn't you start a new thread all your own proclaiming your genius.

Had a kid by the name of Mordaki (sp) that was an excellent kicker but he quit because there was no chance to play. Seems like a good time to bring him back.

Amazing how every college looks for that yet we don't have a JUCO kicker or a high school kicker with confidence.

Also, I'd love to hear your solutions without copying other's. If these solutions are so obvious, how come you can never seem to come up with any original thoughts of your own?

Probably because you lack intelligence and common sense. People like you are parasites to society.

We gave a kicker a scholarship. You think when we did that we were confident we had found our kicker?

I'm glad to know your opinion of me. Makes me feel better about myself when a moron like yourself has those feelings. You aren't the sharpest tool in the shed-you're just a tool.

Slightly OT, but I had to chuckle when they showed Mullen's reaction to the missed FG. The look on his face was priceless. Can anybody get a still shot or Gif of this. The caption could be "WTF? Really?"

Cause Woody McCorvey don't do private school boys. And that's a direct quote. I know Swayze's family. Who could possibly care where a specialist comes from?? By the way, he almost beat us by himself at UAB making field goals from everywhere and pinning us inside our ten multiple times on punts. I think we even muffed one of his punts that they recovered.

Pick the top 5 soccer nations and make them our recruiting grounds for a kicker. There's got to be one in Germany or Mexico we are missing out on right? I'm only half kidding here.

Other than poor recruiting in general, I'd say this kind of thing happens because field goal kicker may be the hardest position to evaluate in high school, with only o-line being close. You have to judge the mental tools along with the physical, which seems to me to be impossible to do with any kind of consistency. It seems to happen to everyone sporadically; just look at Bama a few years ago.

2. Recruit high school kickers that have an extreme amount of confidence.

Great point. This sounds to me like the only way to have any idea of mental strength of a high school kid who's never played in front of 50,000+ people before and the kind of pressure that comes with it. Things might change when actually put in that position, but it's a whole lot better than bringing in a guy who didn't ooze confidence on the small stage either.
