Was the back judge Mark Curles himself or was that a member of his crew? The whole crew should be suspended, immediately.

The excluded his name from the game stats.

The ball was live. The back judge should have never started to wave his arms.

True. But he did which makes the play dead.

A ball laying at rest that has a defender put his hand down on it has been a downed punt since forever. You see it pretty much every week. You would never see a playground crap play like that be allowed in the NFL and then on top of that not even get reviewed? A review would have not only put the ball back at the spot for the ref waving the play dead but would have penalized Memphis for a having 2 players on the play with the same number.

THIS

There is at least one punt in every game in every stadium on every Saturday during every season (in other words every football game ever played) that are treated no differently by the punting team than this one and they are all considered DOWNED.

People defending that just go sit down. You don't know what you're talking about, including those on SEC football final last night.

Marc Curles crew was involved in two games last year where their calls changed the outcome of games, both favoring Auburn (UPig and Ole Miss). So basically 3 out of the last 9 games this crew has worked, their incorrect call changed the outcome of a game.

Interesting food for thought.

How was the ball live? State had ball with knee on ground. If State doesn't do that then yeah live ball and ref made a mistake but that ain't what happened.

Does it say in the rule the ball must be picked up off ground and tucked in arm or given to the ref? The ref blew play dead because he made a judgment it was dead (knee, player, ball, game over), therefore State players quit playing while Memphis didn't.

What the 17 are you talking about? The punt was downed by a defender with his hand and knee down.

No.

The ball was downed by a defender and the back judge blew it dead and threw down the spot.

Exactly. It was downed. Our player put a hand on the ball and his knee was down. I've never seen anyone even attempt a return in that scenario, much less seen it allowed to stand, and I'm in my late 30s. That was the most absurd, incompetent display of alleged officiating I've ever seen at any level.

No it wasn't. First, it was downed.

But even if you want to argue that point, when Emerson stood up off his knee and walked off the ball was at rest. Not moving. It is by rule dead at that point when no player immediately grabs it upon it coming to rest. There can be no delay. It has to be grabbed while coming to rest or immediately when it comes to rest. It was not. The rules expert Terry McCauley explained this on Twitter.

The whole refereeing sequence was so disgraceful that no one is even mentioning how Memphis had players walk off the sideline onto the field (because they, like everyone else, assumed the play was over after seeing the ref signal it dead).

Doesn't matter there were two #4 jerseys on the field. Touchdown should have been nullified.

The ref did not blow the whistle. He moved forward as if was going to mark the ball about the same time Austin picked it up. He then realized the ball was still live and swallowed the whistle. A hand on top of the ball? for a split second, mind you?and knee on the ground does not equal possession. The State players wrongly pulled up on a special teams play?which is happening more and more. Players need to better familiarize themselves with the rules.

The real gripe for State fans should be the two #4?s on the field. Not sure why teams allow for 2 players to have the same number. They only dress 70, so there are ample options.

You must not have seen the official statement from @SECofficiating? They said the ref waved it dead so it shouldn't have been a live ball.

Waving it dead with hands overhead is the same as a whistle. By rule. Read the statement released.

Regardless, possession aside, the instant #1 stood up and took his hand off the ball, assuming he never possessed it and downed it, the ball was still and no player immediately grabbed for it. Therefore, it is dead. That's the rule. Possession is irrelevant at that point. The statement released said as much.

but he did. End of story.

We can debate till the sun comes up whether or not the ball SHOULD'VE been live, but he clearly & objectively waved his arms thus ending the play. end of story.

Not to mention the multiple penalties that Memphis committed on the play that went uncalled by having too many people on the field & two #4s

This is insanity. The ref blew his whistle to down the ball. It's objectively a screw job.

Should be removed from the record books immediately due to the lack of integrity of the outcome

I haven't ever heard a whistle blow in any video I've seen, but I've seen people on Twitter claiming to have heard one. I'm just not sure if he did or not. Regardless, waving the hands is the same thing as blowing the whistle according to the rules, so it doesn't matter.

Friends at the game had the play happen right in front of them - they said they heard a whistle.
