I'm not sure order of finish in the SEC tells us as much as just general rankings. The order of finish in the SEC is mostly going to be pretty consistent over a four year period. Even if we do improve our recruiting, it's not necessarily going to show up in the rankings fully because players are more or less ranked based on who is recruiting them.

We just have to keep the level of talent close enough that having a few underrated players develop into stars plus using a system to take advantage of the talent we do have can give us a chance to overcome the talent gap every so often.

Average team talent is gradually improving. i did not see where this ranking is available before 2014 but here are individual yearly rankings for few previous years

2014 - 12th & 36th

2013 - 10th & 24th

2012 - 9th & 22nd - 1st year of 14 SEC teams

2011 - 11th & 41st - only 12 teams

We seem to be more consistently getting in the top 25 in recruiting better than we were a decade ago and light years ahead of the Croom years which gives us better depth.

Leach & Co seem to be going after the longer and taller players and while we don't have a ton of four star guys, there are a bunch of guys just outside the 4 star ranking that keeps the class looking very nice. They have a few more good targets that should be there before signing day. I like that they seem to have backup plans in place when they miss on a guy. It does make it a bit easier when you can find a transfer guy that starts.

That last part, transfers, is one of the reasons I watch team talent rather than individual years. What did they get two or three starters this year and the Backup #2 &#3 QB if Abraham gets healthy. That helps fill holes.

The real issue with this is that in the SEC playing and in the SEC we have to play 5 top 5 teams every year whereas if we were in the ACC with this recruiting ranking we will only have played two so it?s not finishing in the top 25 is just a metric off of who we actually play

This is absolutely true but getting the talent year in and year out will help with depth and filling holes. Mullen seemed to have years where he would mail in the recruiting with a 36th and 41st ranking.

State seems to be getting more consistent at recruiting every year. That will help and then winning will help. Let's hope Leach does a little of that this year. That will make it better and could even by signing day. One or tow guys could decide to come here this class.

And that is disgustingly bad recruiting. He was headed out the door and it showed. He had every intention of leaving after that year, I don't see Leach doing that. I could be wrong but I think he plans on winning here.
