I saw where Stick, the equipment manager, is leaving. Anyone know where he is going?

I think Patriots is correct.

I've heard there was a little bit of bad blood in the way things ended. Anyone know anything about this?

Timing is odd. Our camp starts in a week and nfl has already started.

I have a source familiar with the situation.

Stick loved it here, and was widely regarded as one of the best equipment managers in the world regardless of sport or competition level.

The issue was disrespect in the pay department. Everyone took a hit in pay during Covid. Top level folks got rewarded handsomely in the aftermath while people at Stick's level were given a pittance.

He's not the only one that left, just the most noticeable, and others are unhappy. Heard this on 7/6 from someone who was very close to the situation.

About the same I heard. Seems lately that our football support staff hasn't been treated very well. Whether it was Mason Smith or now this situation with Stick. It's definitely something here that needs to get corrected.

Equipment managers usually make really good money at the professional level anyway. Was probably a good career move long term regardless.

Weren't we one of the only universities in the SEC that didn't have layoffs during COVID?

How does one gauge this?

I was thinking the same thing. He must have got the highest score on the equipment manager's Wonderlic test. **

Demand. From my same source - Stick regularly received interest from NFL teams but said no because he was a Bulldog first.

When he felt disrespected, he put his name out there and multiple people sports teams reached out and there was a bit of a bidding war.

I don't think that happens with most equipment managers. It didn't take him long to find new work.

This is not the first time he has left for another job. He left for a few years when Mullen was the coach and then came back around 2016-17ish.

I mean is there a "best waterboy in the world" title?

Pretty sure that one was decided down on the Bayou.

Athletic dept. budgets across the country are taking a hit, especially those not in the SEC. It seems all most want to hire are very low paid interns.

Does this land at Leach's desk or is this an issue at the AD desk?

My guess is that this is an AD issue since they're the ones signing the checks. I imagine they asked Leach for his input on it but since he's only been HC for one year and he's in Key West during the offseason I don't imagine he has too much of an opinion over someone like Dan who had been here for 10 years and seen how everything was run on a day by day schedule.

It does and it's the one real knock I have on Cohen is his management of the other depts. outside of baseball. We've had a lot of key members in multiple depts. that we've basically just let walk since around 2018. It started with Bob and it's just been someone here or someone there but they've all been important. Heck we just lost Joe Williams to NC State. I know that's won't register on most people's radars but he's the guy who shot and edited all the baseball videos this year and did a hell of a job. I thought our baseball videos were the best thing we've done since the Hailstate Highlight was introduced in 2014.

Winning the Natty probably bought Cohen some extra time, but his future depends on the success of Mike Leach.

I would say it bought him a lot of time. But, he better start raising some money if we want to hang with the SEC in football these days.

Can the guy just not be taking a new job...., moving up the ladder?

Does there have to be drama and a Cohen f&@k up?

Ehh, here?s the thing with Stick. He was ok if he didn?t have to move on because he truly loved it here. He worked his tail off because he loved it here. He just wanted to know that admin was willing to support him - i.e., he wasn?t asking for the moon, just to be given fair consideration with salary (at least that?s the going line). Our admin - it seems - has chosen to let very dedicated, hard-working, and very talented personnel that have been integral parts of our depts to walk away because they don?t value what they bring to the table. Stick is one of MANY athletic staff members within the depts. that this has occurred with. TBH, it is slowly beginning to show in several areas throughout the athletic dept.

ETA:
I don?t have the greatest sources with the new staff, along with Covid, so this is all merely my opinions formed from lots of convos over the recent months

I agree and this has been going on for years. It's really sad. Not sure if it's someone on the inside that's the reason and is just writing these people off or what but someone needs to look into this and fix it

So, you pretty much just described every governmental/educational organization I've ever known of and ever worked for. The thing about most Govt/Ed employers is they are somewhat hamstrung by the system when it comes to raises or anything pay or benefit related. And yeah, it tends to screw long time employees - especially those who aren't in Senior leadership positions. It's why you see a lot of us move around instead of sticking longer in one spot because to get better pay you have to be moving up. I guy like Stick has his best negotiating power when he is being hired, not when he's been on the job for 5-10 years. It sucks, but it is what it is.
