Or trying to find MSU students to give public intoxication tickets to.

Seriously Cooter? My daughter texted me at 2 AM, but didn?t talk to her until lunch. Starkville needs to get real serious about the District area. Good to know they got those POS!

Y'all sure are vague about this information that you may possibly know about in this situation.

from the other board:

"Yeah, talked to a cop that said four people were hit but nothing fatal to her knowledge, my truck was parked in that lot and was right next to a vehicle that had been hit. Took 2 hours before they let me get to my truck considering it was parked on a crime scene. From what i understand the guys that were hit are also suspects and started shooting first. Thankfully it didn't happen five minutes later when people are walking back to their vehicles because it happened right before 1:00, when the bars close."

Thugs got in a shoot out with each other behind Coconuts around 1:30 AM. Couple of them shot each other in the leg apparently. Some reports of like 20+ shots fired.

We appear to be getting a lot of low life?s from surrounding areas coming to hang out downtown. My son who lives in the vista says it gets pretty sketchy late night..... These people aren?t going to bars - just hanging out. Probably drug related as well

I'm going to guess "Zaheid Logan" and "Eric Jefferson" are not scholarly members of the University. Two of the 4 that have been named.

Yeah, that was me that posted that over there.

It was something else, think the dispute was over a woman (believe it or not!) The problem in the district now is not the people grabbing drinks at the bars, its the younger crowd that goes to hang around the area and deal with drugs.

Boy, that is hitting too close to home. My daughter lives in the University Towers apartments next to Bin 612. Hope they get that riffraff cleaned up and fast! If there were really multiple gunshots then Starkville PD needs to be setting up shop around that area.

Just a rule of mine, get in by 11 or 12. Nothing good happens after that; that goes for anywhere.

If that's where the drugs are being dealt, it's bc there is where the demand is.

You think this couldn't have happened at 3 in the afternoon. Everyone knows why the Cotton District has these incidents from time to time.

This is the Unfortunate Truth. Some shit has NO perfect / utopian solution; only the one that results in less pain for society. The "war on drugs" is just as much a joke as the "war on poverty". Sorry, I've been to Amsterdam and I'll take that city over Chicago every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

You are correct. Socialist countries sometimes produce a good one. Chicago isn't that bad, if you stay to the better parts of the town during the day.

Just hate to see the Cotton District having violence issues though because that is THE primary off-campus area that has food and entertainment for students and alums to hang out at and enjoy. Would be easier to understand if it was happening in some thuggish neighborhood in a different part of town.

Dealing drugs retail doesn't require gangs. I've known plenty of affluent people that do drugs and they don't deal with gang bangers. It's a lot of work, and it comes with political blowback because you are going to hassle some students and non-dealing, non-carrying people, but the starkville police/city government can chase those elements out of the cotton district if they decide they want to.

A lot of Starkville crime such as break-ins, burglary, and gun violence comes from Clay and Lowndes county and surrounding areas. It's a recurring issue so it is important to note

I agree but there's a stronger correlation than county residence of all of the rising crime in Starkville. It's really getting out of control.

I could give 2 shits if the crime is local or from surrounding areas. Crime is crime, and city and county officials need to crack down on all of it. Starts with law enforcement, your prosecutors, and judges?..be a non-tolerant area and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law! I have 1 daughter there and it will be 2 after next year with another 1 to follow four years later. College is where young lives begin not end!

Prosecution of a crime is reactive. Knowing why Starkville is trending this way, and where it's coming from so they can put plans in place (road blocks on 82 etc.) is proactive. That's why you should give a shit.

Legalize drugs and crime goes down, cartels crumble and terrorists lose billions per year. Amsterdam better than Chicago. And our treasury goes from billions in the red to billions in the black regarding drugs .

Things have been slowly going down hill in Columbus for decades and decades. The Columbus my parents grew up in, was safer, nicer and cleaner than my Columbus of the 80s and 90s. Present day Columbus is far worse than my Columbus. I hear folks say the same for West Point. That trend isn't reversing course.

My kid wants to go to MSU in 2022. I'm making my kid take visits in many other places. East TN. Arkansas. Trying to get to Colorado. But I don't know much about Colorado myself.

What are the issues in Columbus and West Point? And how do we solve them?

If it's anything like the Delta, and I don't know that it is or isn't, the middle class jobs all but completely dried up. What's left are the farms and welfare, plus a few mercantile, banking, and gas station related jobs. And farms don't look to the local labor pool as they once did. Plus, more and more farms are not owned locally. There are exceptions to all this but not many. There are a host of other factors that involve personal accountability and lack of positive male role models, but the decline began when the jobs went away: e.g., Modern Line, Lewis Grocer/SuperValu, International, and I'm sure there are others around the Indianola area that I've forgotten or were there and gone by the time I came of age in the 90's.

Unfortunately, this is true in almost every small town in America.

FACT. Hopefully, this past Tuesday's mayoral election will go the right way and some of the corruption will be mitigated.

The problems around the district are cyclical. They were around this bad in the summer/fall of 2016 and it culminated with someone being shot 100 ft. from The Bin. After that the cops took better control of things and started patrolling past the bars and on the side streets and it ran the bad crowds out of the district. It needs to be done again. Especially this weekend with another big crowd expected.
