There's really only 2 realistic scenarios:

8 teams - 5 P5 autobids, 2 at large, 1 G5
16 teams - 10 FBS autobids, 6 at large

Not sure why they'd bother with any other number.

need to get rid of the conference championship games though if they go to 16 teams. Not sure if the SEC would want to give that up.

I think a case can be made for 12. The 10 autobids plus two at-large. Top 4 seeds get a bye.

They can expand it to 120 and it wont matter, that's not the issue its just something to make people feel better. The the same 4-6 teams are the only ones who have a shot regardless. "Technically" the regular season is a playoff, everyone starts with the same record, and we still end up with the same result at the end.

8 has always been the correct number. Never understood why they couldn't get it right.
