Might as well get this one going. From what Emerick was saying on twitter tonight, sounds like the staff already has got commits for that class. So here goes the fun ....

Enyce Sledge -- big DT out of Monroe, LA.
I actually saw him post under Emerick's twitter post tonight. Kid faced a LOT of double teams in his video, and he more than held his own and then some. Needs some technique work, but dang, he's a freakin' bull!

Another major DT, this time from Columbia, Mississippi
Jaheim Oatis. What a beast.
You've probably seen this short video of him that circulated twitter this fall, and I honestly had no idea this is who it was:
https://twitter.com/jaheimoatis/status/1307304153237118976?s=21
I can't find updated video of this season, but his stats are crazy. Got one buddy that coached against him, and he said "a freak....just a monster in the middle that haunts you all week long trying to prep for him".
Will be hard to fight off Bama and LSU.
ETA:
I did find this one video of him. He apparently also is the kicker for KOs. And he straight de-cleated this poor returner 😳😳😳😳😳👀👀👀

Follow the link above to his twitter page, it's the post right above the one linked. Funny stuff

State target #1 -
Khamauri Rogers - CB

I know he's been an LSU fan his whole life, but you need to work the recruiting to the end with this kid. He's as good of a cant miss CB as there is.

My personal #1 target is

Zxavian Harris - DT
Germantown HS
Madison, MS

He's 6'8" 330 lbs
I'll let his film tell the tale

https://www.hudl.com/video/3/11541064/5fce87d815f62d09a8e8e417

He's the NT that this defense needs. And he's quick enough and long enough to slide him to DE at times and really wreck a place up.

Getting John Lewis has to help with Harris being from G’town right?

yes, it means the line of thinking at G-Town is correct when it comes to defensive players.

Not a wish list.

This a WAYYYYY EARLY lost of guys that members of the staff are looking at/following/talking to/offered.
I know we are all but out of the picture for this guy, but it's not bad to see what the best is so that you can judge what's out there.

We're playing checkers, while everyone else are playing chess. Seriously. As I've said a thousand times, nothing against Bracky as a person, but he should not be in that position. This is an institutional/cultural problem systemic at MSU. Every other school that's serious about playing football seriously have guys in that position who've previously worked in the area of NCAA compliance (many actually for the NCAA...literally/flipped double-agents). We're literally tying our hands behind our back while we slowly shuffle to a fist-fight with our socks and sandals. We are literally perpetuating ourselves in underachieving. It boggles the mind.

Here's who I would consider early targets that MSU has a good shot with AS OF NOW:

Stone Blanton (https://247sports.com/player/stone-blanton-46098545/) - 4 star MLB from MRA. He's also a baseball commit to us, but he's receiving national interest from the likes of Clemson, so we're going to have to fight to get him here. Grew up a State fan and wants to play baseball here, so we've got as good of a shot as any.

JD Stewart (https://247sports.com/player/jd-stewart-46101483/) - 3 star OLB from Greenwood. Very good player who has consistently named State as his leader. We've had good success with kids from Greenwood and the delta.

Donterry Russell (https://247sports.com/player/donterry-russell-46103272/) - 3 star DE/Edge from Provine. Younger brother of Demonte Russell. Built just like Demonte. Gonna be a good one. We have a great shot with him.

Marquez Dortch (https://247sports.com/player/marquez-dortch-46103906/) - 4 star CB from George County. Ole Miss probably has the edge with him now that MJ flipped. But, never say never I guess.

Zxavian Harris (https://247sports.com/player/zxavian-harris-46085727/) - 4 star DT from Germantown. Like I said earlier, this is a dude we pretty much have to get. With the lack of in-state DL in the state this year, we've got to make up for it next year with a guy like him. He seems to like State so far, but man, we'll have to fight the big boys off for him.

Shazz Preston (https://247sports.com/player/shazz-preston-46078814/) - 4 star WR from St. James, LA. Younger brother of Shawn Preston. I think LSU gets him if they want him, because like we saw with Malik Nabers today, if LSU wants a Louisiana kid, 9 times out of 10, they're gonna get that kid. But you never know with a sibling on the team.

Larry Simmons (https://247sports.com/player/larry-simmons-46101006/) - 4 star WR from Moss Point. Still very early with him. I know Ole Miss is after him hard. If we some how land him early, here's your annual flip candidate. Looks to be the early frontrunner for the best WR in the state.

Bryson Hurst (https://247sports.com/player/bryson-hurst-46102114/) - 4 star OT from Gautier. Best OL in Mississippi so far. Ole Miss is also on him. With the air raid, it's going to be tough to recruit high quality OL, because other schools negatively recruit by saying it doesn't prepare you well for the next level. We'll be in the mix, but still too early

Jaydon Hodge (https://247sports.com/player/jaydon-hodge-46096701/) - 3 star S from Ocala, FL. Thanks to Jamar Chaney, we probably lead for this guy. Good player with good offers early on. Hope we stay on him.

Jacoby Matthews (https://247sports.com/player/jacoby-mathews-46082680/) - 4 star S from Ponchatoula, LA. He's consistently talked well of State and included them in lists and such, but again, wouldn't get my hopes up with him being a highly touted Louisiana kid. Eff those coon asses.

Khamauri Rogers (https://247sports.com/player/khamauri-rogers-46081427/) - 4 star CB from Holmes County. Currently an LSU commit, but he's fallen down the rankings over the last few months, so I'm not sure if he sticks with them or not. We just signed his teammate in Corey Ellington so hopefully that helps. Holmes County Central is a very pro MSU school.

James Monds III (https://247sports.com/player/james-monds-iii-46099629/) - 3 star CB from Fort Pierce, FL. We're on this kid pretty hard and he seems to be returning the love. Always tweets positive stuff about MSU. I believe he even made the trip up to Starkville for the game this past Saturday. Hopefully, Jamar Chaney can close the deal on this guy too.

Kailep Edwards (https://247sports.com/player/kailep-edwards-46085819/) - 3 star MLB from Edgard, LA. We seem to lead for this guy early. I don't think he's good enough for LSU to take him, but he seems solid. We should bring in a nice haul of LBs next year.

RJ Moss (https://247sports.com/player/r-j-moss-46103675/) - 3 star DE from Biloxi. Received offers from the instate schools but has remained quiet since. Probably a wait and see guy at this point, but we should have a decent shot if we push.

(LSU bound)

(LSU bound unless they pass)

RJ Moss (https://247sports.com/player/r-j-moss-46103675/) - 3 star DE from Biloxi. Received offers from the instate schools but has remained quiet since. Probably a wait and see guy at this point, but we should have a decent shot if we push. (MIGHT get him but probably headed to JSU)

It’s depressing to think about but we simply won’t win a head to head battle for any player that LSU, Ole Miss, or Bama really wants. We don’t have the network or recruiters to do it. Our administration is fine with that. Handle it like baseball recruiting you know.

Shameless plug for this kid AGAIN.

He is completely blowing up right now in recruiting. Gained multiple G5 offers early on, now he is gaining P5 offers - most notably Utah and Ole Miss. This is a kid that is a legit 4 ⭐️ OT prospect that is currently a 3 ⭐️....just watch. He's gonna blow up the rankings.
And he is everything we could want in an OT

I want Khamari, no doubt, but he's not a 97 rated 4 star. He got that ranking just because of his commitment to LSU.

So if we lose him, it's not like it's a can't miss prospect. Again, I definitely want him.

My shameless plug AGAIN.

Hunter Erb, OT.

in the past week or so, he's received offers from almost every P5 in the PAC and several SEC and Big 12 offers.
Been saying it for well over a year ur was going to blow up

At this point, we are on the outside looking in even if we offer, but I think this staff could do good work there. Hunter's HS has several guys in the pipeline that could be very promising in the coming classes, as well.

OM is kicking our asses in recruiting. They've got a top 20 class this year and will next year. They're cleaning up the skill guys in MS. The MJ double whammy has really hurt us.
And I'll go ahead and tell you, I don't currently expect us to get either of the big DL instate this year. We aren't pulling the top RB either. The top WRs are committed to OM already. I think we've got time to change some of that, but it'll be tough. This staff needs to get things done in state this year.

This years class:

If you extrapolate that to 23 players for MSU we are just about equal in the ranking.

I get some concern , but it’s still 11 months out ... Simmons was surprising and I have changed my feelings with Khamauri Rogers.. it’s out of state or OM.. Not even sure we should get involved to be honest ..
But

I will take
Shazz Preston over Simmons & Jacoby Matthews over Rogers... all day every day.. And we have a great shot at both

With Oatis and Harris.. I see Oatis out of state and Harris to State .
Robinson RB .. honestly if we get him great if not ok..
The biggest blow so far IMO is Marquez Dortch. But it’s still a ways till December and that OM staff could look very different by then

Would love to get a commit form 2 of the 3 if not all 3 of the LBS ( Blanton, Stewart, and Khalid Moore) sooner than later
Russell should be a lock, and his ranking will be lower than it should be.
I think Jacarius Clayton is going to blow up and collect big offers and pressed by some of the big boy schools. Need to make sure we hold on to him. And we seem to be in good shape with Bryson Hurst .. that’s 2 solid instate OL ...

Main thing with next year is hopefully and if it’s not what a crock of shit , camps and visits should be back to normal come early summer. Get some guys on campus and in camps and around some of our coaches and things could change for the better.

Zxavian Harris is an MSU lean. 4*

Bryson Hurst is an MSU lean. 4*

If we stop d*cking around and treat Stone Blanton like the priority he is, we have a decent shot at him. 4*

It's also irrelevant. We didn't lose the Egg Bowl because Leach didn't focus enough on it. We lost it because we showed up with about 45 players and no secondary. Still should have won honestly. Austin Williams fumble was the turning point in that game IMO.

43 players and it came down to the last play after we fumbled at the foot line and rolled several snaps to our QB.

Leach is going to win against OM. They can have that one.

They are not kicking our asses in recruiting. It honestly does not change much from year to year until one just falls off the map or cheats. We will get our share and they will get theirs. It will come down to one or two we both want to win the Twitter battle on signing day

I think we want either Klubnik or Bailey. I think our chances are much better with Bailey. Outside of that I don't really know who we'll take. Our offers are Ewers(tOSU commit), Marichol(FSU commit), Walker Howard(LSU commit), Gunner Stockton(UGA commit), Klubnik, Bailey, Simpson, and MJ Morris.

Ty will only be there 1 year with DJ. DJ will go pro after Ty True Freshman year. There won't be much overlap at all.

Ty is a '22 kid. This coming up year DJ will be a 2nd year Freshman & Ty Will be a Sr. Then Ty True Freshman year DJ will be a 3rd year Soph. He's gone after then. So Ty Will either be a RS Fresh or True Soph.

I never said I didn't like him. But he's a kid we could've waited on and still gotten. We're about to sign two kids that have really never pass blocked in HS. I find that a little odd after the complaints last year that we had too many guys that were run blockers and few OL that fit the scheme. I believe we'll sign 5 OL. So down the road, we're going to have the ability to thin the heard anyway if we hit on several. And hopefully they see a diamond in this kid. OL is a spot you can do that.

I like most of what I'm seeing on the defensive side in recruiting. From all the talk, we lead for some good DL and are in it with some too. That was a concern last round but they appear to have the ball rolling. Still need to fill the DB spots and that's been a chore. Looks like safety is solid but CB still the issue. Looks like we're on several big body, physical receivers this round.

KOdawg1
03-02-2021, 11:47 AM
I think sometimes this staff takes guys a little too early, but they evaluate these guys more in depth than I do and interact with them, so they obviously can read a situation better than I do. I also get that some of these guys could blow up so you want to have them early, but I just think some are guys you could get in the last minute if you had to, and I don't want us to have to turn down a better player Bc we filled up at the position.

The kid has size though which imo, is the most important part.

I just think that's kind of the way things are. I know Elam went to a private school because his public school team shut down due to COVID. The private schools being inferior to public schools thing has been a myth that has been busted for about ten years now. So I think more parents are OK sending their kid to those schools to play sports.

Although I'd like to see Stone Blanton transfer to Madison Central for his senior year. (smile)

That's not a myth. That's fact. Public ball is better, especially athlete-wise. 2A teams have beaten both Prep and MRA the last couple years and those are the best in private.

I think it probably depends on the school and where it is. Benedictine Academy in Savannah comes to mind for me. They cherry pick athletes from around Savannah and put them on "scholarship". They also play in the public-school GHSA at the AAA level instead of destroying the other small private schools in the GISA along the coast like Frederica Academy here on St Simons. They produce D1 athletes regularly. BA regularly beats 4A -7A teams across South Ga. Kids from private schools like BA I think are a bonus and are used to competition at a high level.

Seems good to me. I like that he has been at Arizona where they have to use a similar recruiting model as MSU but he's also been at Michigan where they recruit well and he probably has some insight on how bluebloods recruit and what they put into it- which is what MSU really needs as far as recruiting. Because to be honest I don't feel like we put as much into recruiting as we could or should. And I think it's more of a "we don't know" issue than anything from the administration standpoint.

From what I was told it did . And is actually more to it ..
bottom line Mason May have ended up going to LSU no matter what , but this prick we have here is going to be an issue and he probably isn’t leaving anytime soon..

When did we re-hire Hevesy??***

We are the lowest paying, for such a position, in the SEC (not sure on Vandy). Little Larry Jr. isn't going to pay. But he'll waste a ton on a shitty women's coach or two. But Smith is from LA. It was going to be tough.

An issue in that he's not very good and will turn off recruits or an issue in that he's power hungry and wants to consolidate it all through him. Neither are good btw.

Mason Smith can eat a bag of *****. Anyone that jumps ship can go to hell in my opinion. Hope LSU gets smoked by the NCAA and recruiting gets limited a few years.

They won't

Not only lowers paying but least amount of hired hands for these jobs.
It’s embarrassing and people that bitch 24/7 about our recruiting every year it’s starts with this..

You need to remember we are poor little old Mississippi State, we must know our place. We should be thankful that we have been allowed to have a fairly decent baseball team over the years. But we should not expect to win any championships. State is in the SEC to provide wins for the big boys. When we have something working or good staff members it must be taken away so we will know our place. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it sucks as a Dawg fan, but it just seems like when something good starts, things happen to knock the dawgs down. from recruiting to office personnel.

Is it true that Leach made the comment that we didn't need any more recruiting staff from what we have? Mainly because we had double what Wash. St. had and he felt like we didn't need any more because he's always had fewer.

If we're ever going to compete in this league, we've got to get serious about recruiting. Our recruiting budget is ridiculous, and it shows that we're okay with mediocrity

No
Leach is who he is .. hopefully JC knew that when he hired him .
Leach may be a weird cat but he isn’t stupid..

He left. It wouldn't matter what we did, he was leaving. LSU is the one place he was going no matter what.

Pretty much. Everytime we take a step forward the competition takes three. The SEC money is great but it's also great for everybody else. We remain at the same spot on the list. Incredibly frustrating.

We weren't beating LSU for Mason without tripling what LSU offered.

Yeah hard to beat LSU for Mason when you don’t even try..

It wasn’t all about the money.. and they didn’t triple or even double his salary.

That?s not what he said

He tell you that personally?
And based on what he was making here I cant blame him for leaving. it was beyond laughable...

My final word on this is ..
Everyone that bitches and moans on why we don’t close or why we can’t land certain kids all circles back to the lack of effort we put into recruiting and recruiting guys we have on staff
Some didn’t see the importance of Pat Austin, you saw the results. Who do you think saw the importance and was big on getting Mason on this staff ? Pat Austin.
Go ask Rod Gibson how good this guy was. How many good contacts he had. How the kids and kids parents in the boot and Texas thought of him
Bottom line we dont have near enough guys like the Gibson’s and Smiths .. we don’t pay enough for these spots , we don’t value these positions..
And believe as much as Rod Gibson loves and bleeds maroon and white , if a school came after him with a little more cash don’t think he wouldn’t think long and hard about it

Money wasn’t the only factor in Mason leaving.. if we had countered offered with anything he would have at least listened and considered..

So again believe what you want I am basing all of this from one source.
I don’t care what Rosebowl reports , or what Pail Jones says, or a a certain coach on the staff tells someone , or even an ex staff member.

My info came from Mason Smith himself.

With that said we can get back to MSU recruiting..

Our pay sucks. There's no debate there. Before Covid, we were banking $15M a year in our athletic dept. Now, that came in handy when Covid hit, but that's $15M we did nothing with that we could have. Pat was great, but he got himself in some trouble. Mama called Mason and he left. He'll have a bigger budget and more freedom to use it. He also might be under NCAA probation.
