The first subtle signs of fall are filtering into the Deep South. Students are back in school. There's talk of football. Starkville has already lost 1:20 of daylight. Some of the trees, particularly black tupelo and red maple, starting to get some red leaves. If you were outside yesterday afternoon you noticed the humidity wasn't quite what's it's been. It actually got down in the 60's last night. While summer is far from over, the end is now in sight. The next couple of weeks will start a pretty steady dip in our average temps and we'll be losing daylight at around two minutes a day. Anybody started thinking about that first dove hunt or maybe getting the bow out of the closet and shooting at a target?

That's one reason my kid loves Starkville - seasons. Growing up in the land of eternal summer has some advantages, but I do miss fall. We have about 2 weeks in December, then a couple of nor'easters, then 2 weeks of spring in January/February. The rest is summer.

We been preparing a dove field and began bushhogging roads for deer season. We’ve gone from March to September in record time around here...

I'm thinking what is flu season gonna be like with covid. Haha, sorry...

I don't dove hunt, but I am looking forward to cooler weather and the leaves starting to fall.

Yeah..... i picked up a neoprene mossy oak face mask at bass pro yesterday**

Serious. When I was a kid, it was a tradition. Dove hunt that morning. Go to the game or catch Jack Cristil on the radio that afternoon.

We couldn't do it when I was first allowed to dove hunt. Shooting hours didn't start till noon.

I worked outside a good bit yesterday here in Covington county and it was still pretty damn hot. I will admit though the evening seemed not quite as bad as the past week or so.
I've already been spraying and cutting trails. My son and I have started shooting the bows. It's about damn time. Fishing has been hell on me in this heat and I'm ready for it to just cool a little.

This evening was as pleasant as it’s been in the golden triangle since mid May. Low humidity, nice breeze, and could definitely feel fall in the air. To make it even better I found a shaded hill overlooking our dove field and saw a good 150-200 birds coming and going. Of course they still have a couple weeks to find somewhere they like better but lookin good so far.

My family is actually doing this again for the first time since I was in HS. I'm so pumped.

Just hope football can last until late September. If we actually get started up.

Another hint fall is trying to make an appearance. The long range models keep trying to push cold fronts though towards the end of the run. Now they always get pushed back 2-3 days as we get closer, but the takeaway is the models are starting to pick up on the change of seasons, and before long it's going to call for a front that actually materializes. The avg high for today in Starkville also drops off its summer max. It's been 92 since mid July. Today it drops to 91.

So far, the summer here hasn't been all that brutal. Temperatures have actually been a bit below normal. Oddly enough, to the west about 70 miles, Muscle Shoals has been above normal, so I would imagine most places in Mississippi have been too. The hottest we've had this summer has been 96 (not particularly humid that day), and it's been as cool as 62 in the past week or two. Today was very nice.

Yes. It's been brutal here man. I spent a week about to die because of having to do a bunch of outside work. Then I drove to Nashville where it was 92 degrees outside but felt like 20 degrees cooler than that because the humidity there was nothing compared to central Mississippi.

This was a few weeks ago when we had the heat advisory.

I just want the rain to stop. We've taken on more inches than a porn star lately.

Speaking of heat advisories - I think the NWS has it wrong. Don't know what the criterion is in central Mississippi but here it's a heat index of 105 to 110, then after that it's an excessive heat warning. Both need to be lowered 5 degrees, to 100 and 105. A heat index of 100 is absolutely miserable and dangerous if you're outside, regardless of how often it happens or how acclimated we supposedly become.

I think for most of MS heat adv is 105-111 and excessive heat warning is 112+. I know some places like in Maine I think it starts at 90 or so.
