Any thoughts on this kid? He's a class of 2020 Miss. State men's basketball signee. Has led his team, Grayson HS ( Loganville GA) to #3 in ESPN's Top 25 Boys HS Rankings, and #1 in the state of Georgia. They play tomorrow in the 2020 GHSA Boys State Basketball Tourney, Class 7A.

My opinion, he"s an ultra-athletic athlete at the point guard spot. Amazing vertical, very talented playmaker that's very well coached, and doing an outstanding job of leading that team to near the top of the national rankings.

I've compared him on this board earlier to Courtney Fortson. Also, has some Dee Brown in his game.

Big time player. We need to find a big now to replace Perry and later Ado.

Need Woodard back first of all. Hopefully out of king, Smith, post, and oduro, 2 of them take a big step forward. If we can get nick back to go with Stewart, Molinar, and Smith, we have some potential difference makers at guard

This is why the "fire Howland" crowd is so dumb. The team next year could be better than this one, if Woodard comes back, which I think is the smart play for him as he needs to develop his ball handling more. Nick in his second year as a full time PG backed up by Devion Smith who is a top 50 national player. A fully formed DJ Stewart, who has made a huge jump this year, backed up by a promising Iverson Molinar. Woodard and Elias King (a top 120 player in 2019 class) at SF. They're pretty high on Tolu Smith at PF and you bring back Ado and Oduro at center. We are a little light on high quality post players, but if Tolu is as good as some talk him up, we'll be fine. He's not going to be Perry good, but he can play. Then there is Post who is a wild card IMO, but some people think he'll contribute next year. Definitely a deeper team. Not as long, but being better and deeper in the back court will allow us to be more functional. The college game really is dictated by guard play. Great thing is Stewart is big enough to play the 3, so you could get Spoon/Molinar/Stewart/Woodard+ Ado or Tolu on the court and be super athletic. We'll also be a much better perimeter shooting team next year.

If he was 6'2" instead of 5'11" he'd be a top 15-20 player. He'll be the 1st PG Howland has brought in who won't have to learn how to distribute.

It took Peters some time not to be a score first guard. And he still has a hard time with that mindset.

For some historical perspective and projecting conservatively, Howland is on pace to have the 6th best 3 year win % in program history from 17/18-19/20 at 67%. The two best were in the late 50's/early 60's. This would be the 4th best "modern" stretch in school history and the best in 15 years.

I hope Devion has a calm, but aggressive demeanor like DJ does. We really need a PG that shows up every night with consistent play.

While Nick is certainly capable, much like Lamar before him, he lets his emotions get the better of himself. PG is the one position that you simply cannot have erratic play from and the fact that is what we have had explains our inconsistent play for the last 4 years IMO.

Good lord man, Howland can’t coach! What’s it going to take for you guys to realize this? Have you ever watched a team that’s well coached? Howland’s teams exhibit none of those characteristics. Yes they’re talented, but so what? We’ve been hearing about their talent for five years. They underachieve every year, and guys like you keep sticking your head in the sand about it.

How's he look from 3 point range?

He made 1 shot from out there where he was standing on the 3 point line. Missed another attempt. Was mostly busy distributing to teammates. They have a very well coached team with good shooters throughout the roster, and play an up tempo style. Deivon is one of the fastest guards around with the ball, and plays mostly under control, but attempts very acrobatic layups and dunks at times. Looks as fast as Gary Ervin. Also, looks really good on defense.

Looks like a Bruce Pearl or Nolan Richardson type point guard.

They have a shooting guard named Caleb Murphy (South Florida signee)...looks like the real deal. I see where Murphy had a Miss. State offer as well as other top schools, but ultimately signed with South Florida.

I’m not even going to try to explain it to you. There’s been a myriad of posts by other people on this board that have detailed all of the coaching shortcomings of this team for the last five years. You can scroll back through them if you want, or not. I don’t really care what you think. I can only tell you that at the end of this season, Howland’s MSU teams will still have the same number of NCAA tournament wins as Rick Ray. Chew on that for a while.

The guy that went to back to three consecutive final fours can't coach? The guy that won the Pac12 four times in ten years? And finished second another two times?

Our team does some things well and other things poorly. Some of that is that the game has changed, some of that is that our natural recruiting area doesn't produce a lot of polished talent, some of that is probably that Howland doesn't have a slate of assistant coaches that are particularly good at the teaching/coaching part.

But even taking your opinion as true, it's still dumb to think firing Howland is a good idea right now. We are not a super desirable job in basketball. Certainly a good job, but not one that a lot of hot up and comers are going to jump at. Anybody that can keep us on the bubble consistently without embarrassing off the court incidents is somebody we shouldn't fire. That's certainly not our ceiling, but it's good enough that we are likely to downgrade if we fire our coach and take a flyer on a new coach.

We have ENOUGH to be number 1 in the SEC. Meaning we have enough talent to beat any of those teams on any given night.. We can't though because Howland is washed up and done.

That is exactly what I am saying....that was 12-15 years ago. He is not even close to the same coach.
