Been watching for years and love the round ball. My top 3 are.

1. Gary Hooker--thanks Al Perry for bring Hooker to MSU.

2. Super D. Man he was fun to watch.

3. Jarvis Varnado--the block King. Watch him swat the ball was a blast.

That’s a great list.

1.) Super D
2.) Dontae Jones
3.) Jeff Malone (my first games were when he was playing - when he knew it was a good shot from the corner, he would start running up the court before it went in... it usually did. I still try and imitate it.)

Ha! Classic! Great memories right there. Too bad there wasn’t a market for BP imitators, you would’ve made a fortune!

One of the most exciting dunks I've ever seen in college hoops was Dampier's against UGA in the '96 SEC Tourney. Would love to see that one again but Youtube ain't doing me no favors.

Hard to name just 3. I'll give some groups. This does not include anyone on current roster, got a few that are moving up the list this year.

Guards - Bowers, Zimmerman, Gordon

Forward - Rhodes, Roberts, D.Jones

Center - Dampier, Varnardo

Under rated favorites. Cameron Burns - 6-7 thunder inside, Brandon Vincent - Mr.Hustle and garbage man,

Jeff Malone (even though he was just a touch before my time) doesn't get the love he deserves from State fans. He came across my Twitter feed this week in fact on an NBA throwback account. It talked about how deadly he was in the NBA. I'm pretty sure he was a top 3 scorer in the NBA for several years.

If there had ben a three point line back then Malone would have averaged 30 a game his last year. He is the best guard ever to play at MSU.

Don't know about that, Liverpool.....Red Stroud was deadly as well. Would have been unbelievable with a 3 point line. However, he did play in a totally different style of basketball than Malone's years. Not taking anything away from Jeff..

Didn't Frazier play 15 years?

Wasn't he the hustling fella who was always grabbing loose balls like a linebacker goes after a fumbled football?

All the above were great!

Surprised no one has mentioned Zimmerman. He was just a blur with the ball.

I'm only 32, so some of the older ones may be lost on me, but those that come to mind:

1. Lawrence Roberts
2. Winsome Frazier (streaky, but when the guy was hot, he was hot)
3. Shane Power (personal favorite. Super nice guy that was a great contributor and possibly TOO unselfish shooting the ball)

First and foremost favorite and its not even close:
1. CHARLES RHODES(my equivalent to Boobie D for basketball) when he went out to mid-court on senior day and kissed that M on center court(I may have been cutting a few onions at that moment...)
.
.
.
2. Jamont Gordon
3. Mario Austin/Dee Bost

There are many, but three of my all-time personal exciting to watch play:

1. Greg Grim
2. Cameron Burns
3. Derrick Zimmerman

I could make a lot of top threes, but those three just I just always wanted to see play.
Three, okay six, but I could go on all day, I tried to put in my top three:

1. Mario Austin
2. Timmy Bowers
3. Kalpatrick Wells
4. Darryl Wilson
5. 1/2 of one season- Dontae Jones
6. Todd Merritt
Charles Rhodes- one of my all-time favorites, hate he's not number one, prolly really is....

I think he played 14 years and Ontario Harper played 20.

1. Derrick Zimmerman - watching a 6 ft guard dunk on 7 fters was awesome. My wife's favorite player ever.
2. Varnardo - Swat King
3. Mario Austin - loved his passing ability as a big man
4. Dontae Jones - I went and watched him at Northeast the year before he went to State, most dominant player I have ever seen play in real life above high school. There was zero that anyone on that court could do to stop him from scoring. If he wasn't doing a highlight dunk, he was making one of the best jump shots you would see. Very Jordan esque. I think he had an ankle injury at some point that ended his NBA career before it really started. He also rarely played defense which didn't help.

1. Timmy Bowers- most consistent player I've seen in maroon and white. He was clutch, we was athletic, and he was no primadonna.
2. Dontae Jones- most gifted athlete I've seen in person in any sport.
3. Winsome Frazier- played extremely hard, was tough, and he seemed to never get tired. Was streaky good with the 3 ball.

honorable mention: Cameron Burns- electrified the fans with his powerful two hand dunks!

Dontae has to be #1.

Zimmerman/Bowers almost have to be mentioned together.

After that it would probably be Daryl Or Swat. Chasing the block record was a lot of fun, but so was nailing 3's on the way to the final four.

Surprised Q has not been mentioned once. I know these aren't our fondest times in basketball but he dunked on multiple people as a true freshman so effortlessly. I think the wrist injury hindered his overall potential.

Not a top 3, but also really liked watching Ravern Johnson. His 3s were money until proven otherwise.

I was there for Jeff Malone's first game in the Hump, scored over 30. But the truest bball “DOG" was Wiley Peck. When he walked out and pulled his jersey out it was work time and game was on. Probably the hardest working best rebounder I?ve ever seen. That was another year the NCAA pounded the bullDOG backside when they were denied any tournament.....can?t remember but it was 1977 I think. I also add watching the DOGS smash Kentucky in the SEC tourney final OT is still one of the most incredible feats EVAH......

That's a good list right there. Wilson and Frazier could D up some opposing guards, regardless of how good they were. Didn't matter ... They'd shut them down.

Q wasn't super flashy. I said it before but Q was quietly our best player in a decade. The guy just consistently made buckets. He had great body control and could drive the lane about as well as anyone in a while. You would think he was having a decent game and at the end of the game he might have 30 points and 10 rebounds. He was also pretty quiet. He didn't do much trash talking or chest bumping.
