An inspection reveals that failure of the Oktibbeha County Lake Dam may be imminent following heavy rainfall in the area, according to Oktibbeha County EMA.

The dam is located between Riviera Road and Walter Bell Road just north of Perkins Drive.

Campanella says residents on those roads should evacuate immediately.

She says the evacuation is not mandatory at this time, but residents in the area near the dam should move a safe distance away.

The Oktibbeha County Community Safe Room on Lynn Lane in Starkville is open to assist residents.

Campanella says other roads impacted in the event the dam breaks include:

County Lake Road from Highway 83 to Harrell Road,

Walter Bell Road from County Lake Road to Watershed Drive.

Perkins Drive

Highway 389 from Wade Road to Sudduth Road

Reed Road from Highway 25 Bypass to County Lake Road

Highway 82 from County Lake Road to Highway 25 Bypass

Sun Creek Road from Camp Seminole Road to Highway 389

Highway 50 from John Henry Toad to Tribble Road

Don't know where you live but if you are ever driving East on Ross Barnett damn crossing from Madison county to Rankin once you pass the concrete damn start looking to your left and you will see the rocks piled up on the dirt part of the damn. That was a breech in the damn back in 1979 that they had to plug. It was bad but it almost really got bad.

Was that in April of 1979 when the Jackson area got flooded? I was living down there then.

That?s actually the emergency ?spillway? for the reservoir. It?s designed to breach to prevent a catastrophic failure of the dam.
