Long post inbound. I have been a long time reader of this board and I have seen the narrative about Moorhead and his offense only beating up crappy teams with superior talent and struggling against good teams. I wanted to break down all of the years Moorhead was the playcaller, so I looked at all his offensive coordinator and head coaching stops in his career to see if that holds up. Below I have the yearly breakdown for you guys.

When Moorhead was first announced I really liked the hire and got giddy watching videos of him breaking down his offenses from his time at Fordham and the SI article about him in 2017. Then Kentucky and Florida last year happened and I started to see major redflags. So, I went back and watched Penn State games from 2016-2017 and Fordham games from 2014-2015 and he really uses the same formations all the time. Good defensive minds with elite athletes, like Ohio State and SEC teams, have put Moorhead?s offense in tough situations.

Like Devious Dawg pointed out in his post, he had an NFL back at UConn and Fordham and NFL players at Penn State. At Penn State he had a top 2 offense in the Big Ten from a talent perspective. Enough rambling:

I think 2012 was when he invented the current iteration in the broom closet at Fordham? My take is that his offense was very good at Fordham and Penn State. Saquon Barkley is a generational talent so maybe you can put an asterisk next to the Penn State years....but typically really good offenses have at least one NFL player (even in the Patriot League) and bad offenses don't... so I can't really fault him for having NFL players at any of his stops. No doubt, his offense has not been good at Mississippi State but we will find out a lot next year with Shrader because if he is getting to the 4th progression then he clearly has a grasp of what JoMo is trying to do.

And yet the passing offense against a shit passing defense was extremely shitty. Watching the game, I had flashbacks of the Croom days. Having WR run 4 yard routes on 3rd and 7. Honestly the best offensive plays are either straight handoffs so the Oline just blows people off the line or shitty pass plays that break down and Shrader just takes off running. Other than that, Joe's offense is pretty pathetic. Of course, as soon as we get those Bama/LSU level WRs then we will take off. Just have to wait on Moulds clones.

Cliff Notes(without reading):

1. When he has superior talent, the offense is good.

2. When he has inferior talent, the offense is bad.

Also, I thought I was the king of long posts, I don't say things often, but when I do, I say a lot. However, this one takes the case. In this case, I have to agree with Scooba, presentation is everything with a post this long, especially statistical posts. Not gonna lie, I opened this thread and it made my eyes hurt, seriously. I appreciate the effort though, and don't let any of these dick heads tell you how you should do something(except the presentation part).

At UCONN, he had a 1st team All-American RB, Jordan Todman. Then he went to Fordham, where he was the only school in his conference that offered scholarships, clearly an unfair advantage, to say the least. Also at Fordham he was gifted All-American RB Chase Edmonds who had a 100 yard game recently in the NFL. Then he went to Penn State after Fordham, was gifted Saquon and once again, superior talent. Not sure how Cohen didn't atleast see this as a red flag, maybe he did.

It basically comes down to this:
MSU 2018 Scoring Offense was 68th in the country with 28.5 PPG
MSU 2019 Scoring Offense was 75th in the country with 27.6 PPG

Based on was Devious posted regarding Furman and the scholarship situation, those stats are meaningless.

Joe will either have to adapt to be successful or move on - I don't think adaption is in his vocabulary.

I would add:

MSU 2017 Scoring Offense was 41st in the country with 32.0 PPG - The 2018 team lost very little production from the 2017 team. The team returned a bulk of their Oline, record setting QB, and a 1,000 yard rusher. Joe decided to throw all of that out and install an offense that utilized none of the talent on the roster.

I do wonder what Aeris did to get on Joe's bad side since he was probably the most complete back MSU has had since Ballard. Joe seems to play favorites more than most coaches hence Guidry continuing to start only to drop pass after pass.

Word of the day: Regression

In a sentence: Since JoMo has stepped foot on campus, the offense has undergone consistent regression.

Isn't the story that he came up with his current offense to fit his players at Fordham?

It is which makes our current situation all the more confusing.

Either way, he'll have to figure it out this off season or be fired.

Hopefully he takes the same passion as the kick rocks speech into the off season and fix this thing.

It is which makes our current situation all the more confusing.

Either way, he'll have to figure it out this off season or be fired.

Hopefully he takes the same passion as the kick rocks speech into the off season and fix this thing.

I am certain next year is not a make or break year for Moorhead. Word is he is getting 5 years no matter what.

Have no idea how true that "word" is but I had already resigned myself to 4 years of Joe at a minimum. Figure he'll stumble to another 6-6 and probably may squeak another out against OM. It may be even longer than that since SEC W is declining overall so our schedule is setup for 6 wins minimum. The top isn't as strong as it has been and the bottom really sucks. As long as Shoop is here we'll probably get 6 to 7 (no more) every year.

If this year's schedule was against the SEC slate/teams in 2014 we would have won 1 SEC game this year ... Vandy.

When has Joe ever been proactive, particularly about fixing things? At this point, I hope we've all learned that Joe's motivation springs from being reactionary. Heck, being reactive pretty much sums up his offensive philosophy, and appears to be an extension of his personality. If he actually has a vision to be proactive about, he sure as heck has not articulated it to the fanbase.

Well, his offense is very Croom like so might as well give him 5 years to destroy the program.

Isn't the story that he came up with his current offense to fit his players at Fordham?

I think the biggest problem is that in Joe's mind, he is revolutionary and has found the "perfect" offense so he doesn't think it is anything to do with his offense. He just needs better players. Our problem is those same players were leading Bama in 2017 and destroying UK and LSU. The next year with almost the exact same team, that offense barely crossed the 50 in those games. Moorhead blames the players but then this year with "his QB", it is even worse.

Bingo. Dunno why anyone thinks it is any different. We're trying to recruit kids to him here. We may as well say he's here for life.

I actually read the OP. Basically, what we are seeing is illustrated in the numbers. Moorhead rarely, if ever, wins when he doesn't have a talent advantage and almost always loses a game or two he shouldn't along the way.

After reading this I have less hope of this thing turning around than I had before, and I basically had zero hope previously. Seems like something that should've been caught prior to making the hire. This whole situation is a giant Charlie Foxtrot. Geez.

Just like with Cohen going to the mat for Joe on Wyatt and Bounds. Optics, baby!

Also, it sounds like we got some recruits thinking Joe is gone after next season and we're trying to convince them otherwise.

2 things proved to me that Joe isn't a savant--His refusal to qb sneak from for 1 yard with the all time QB rushing leader in the SEC. Him not putting Hill-A-Train and Fitz on the field at the same time.Meanwhile playing wrs that couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie.
