I posted this in another thread, but thought it deserved its own thread:

We don't have the best net yardage, it's actually very average. However, we do have the best coverage / return yard average in the country.

NEGATIVE 0.7 yards per return. That is amazing. The next closest team is POSITIVE 2.7 yards.

Says a lot about how good our punter is... and we bench him

Aside from the safety, Devon Bell actually outpunted Swedenburg in that game.

Devon Bell: 3 punts, 46 yard average. 2 fair catches. 1 return for 6 yards
Swedenburg: 2 punts, 41 yard average. 1 fair catch. 1 return for 7 yards

Let's fire our special teams coach!**

There are also only a few schools who have had fewer punts that had a return attempt, as well. I'll take the lower net yardage if it means we eliminate the possibility of a big return, and it seems as though over the last couple of years, we have.

Our special teams is fairly good overall. Our coverage units are very good, and our punter is very good. It's just that our FG kicking has not been good. Bell did ok after the first few games last year, but he's been plain bad this year.

If we can find ourselves a kicker, our overall ST may be an advantage on most teams we play.

Agreed. I think it's time to go with Sobiesk.

I think ESPN is mistaken.

I'm missing something here.

If we've given up negative total return yardage, why does the net punting number on both sites imply we give up almost 6 yards/punt?

It's more than just the punter. We got some speed and they are getting down field to cover.
