I'd start w a terrible recruiting base and end w no tradition. In between that they are in a league that they are bottom of the totem pole..... where you find Rutgers.

You would think a State the size or NY would have a good recruiting base. That is crazy they only have three or four four stars in the entire State.

They probably need an offensive guru.

It's their mascot. No team named the scarlet knights will ever win big lol

I'll add that they have fairly high academic standards as well if I'm not mistaken. Probably their best chance to have success is to try to poach Penn State's and Ohio State's leftovers and get whatever they can out of New Jersey and New York City.

One of Memphis' biggest problems was they gave basketball the biggest share of the athletic budget. They started giving football more of it the past few years and it's paid off for them. If they can keep a good coach, they should be able to sustain their current levels.

Memphis problem has always been .... it’s a basketball town first. Sec football town second. If Memphis ever got into the sec, their football program would recruit well.

The only things I know about them is they have a good turf school and they aren't going to hire Joe Moorhead.

The best athletes in Upstate NY play hockey and lacrosse. They are not playing much football there. I was always supposed to drove by a HS game that had less spectators than a pee wee game down south.

Wasn't that long ago they were actually winning. I remember them being ranked.

Edit:
They were ranked as high as 7 in '06 with 11 wins. They had several 8 and 9 win seasons over a ten yr period recently.
from '04-'14 they went 83-56 and had some pretty big wins over ranked teams. One in particular that stood out was a win over #2 USF (didn't realize USF was that high) in '07.

It?s a soft state..... they suspended a high school coach for scoring too much in a game. Promoting a soft culture, promotes soft players. It?s hard to recruit in-state players that have been told to be nice to the other team their entire life.

Piscataway used to be a place opponents feared to play. Rutgers messed up when they left the Big East. They would've been able to have some success if they'd have moved to the American with some of the other Big East teams. But I do believe that someone could come in there and win 6-7 a year. The bottom of the Big 10 is beyond bad.

Back in the Ray Rice time, yes Rutgers had a few good years

As difficult as it is for us, OM, and Arkansas to compete with bama, LSU, and Auburn (not to mention a&m's money), the gap between us and them is exponentially smaller than to gap between Rutgers and the trio of Ohio st, Michigan, and penn st. Throw in Michigan st who has more recent success than A&M, but less resources, and you're looking at consistently topping out at 5th in your own division if you can beat Maryland and Indiana. Schiano's run in the late 00s wouldn't happen with their current conference situation. Could someone consistently beat Indiana and Maryland and schedule themselves 3 non-conference Ws? Sure, but that only gets you to 5 Ws, so gonna have to claw your way up over better programs with more talent just to get to bowl eligibility most years.
