View Full Version : Anyone think that maybe 5 yards for holding would make for a better game?

Not talking about returns but from scrimmage.

A holding call is the kiss of death for a lot of offenses. It's never called consistently. There's holding on almost every play, but they don't call it.

So holding calls are kind of like a lottery. How lucky are you? When you're playing blue bloods you're generally not as lucky as they are.

I think calling it a little tighter, but a 5 yard penalty would make the game more fair.

10 yards for holding is stupid. Happens on every play. Make it five yards.

Lesser teams get more holding calls because the other team is blowing right passed them. I say let the holding calls stay at 10 yards. People need to learn to be better executing their technique and let the man go when you are beat.

That's exactly why it's 10 yards. The 10 yards is a deterrent because it happens so often.

Kind of like why speeding tickets are so expensive

Better idea. Crush up viagra and dissolve it into a paste. rub it on the offensive linemans hands. All of their fingers are stiff. No grabbing.

The point is that it's already not a deterrent at 10 yards because it still happens every single play, it's that the enforcement of holding feels arbitrary since it could be called every single play. So the choice is to lessen the penalty so it's doesn't swing games so wildly at times or call every instance so enforcement doesn't feel arbitrary. I don't wanna see 100 holding calls every game.

I think there may possibly be a need to consider changing one or maybe a couple of rules, but I don't think the 10 yard penalty for holding is one of them. The targeting calls seem to still be a work in progress as they seem to vary some from situation to situation. Player safety is the key factor though.

It never happens in the Capstone. Unless the away team is driving for a winning score then it will happen at least 2 times.

Yep, SEC refs call the penalty mostly against the weaker conference teams. Rarely see it ever get called against Bama even when it seems obvious. Due to that I'm to point where I wonder if, since its legal for Bama, we just make it legal for everyone? If you made holding legal at least everyone would be playing under the same standard.
