Well deserved

Making his first collegiate start, true freshman quarterback Garrett Shrader led Mississippi State past Kentucky, 28-13, in its SEC opener and now caps the impressive performance with SEC Fresman of the Week honors.

Shrader is the first Bulldog offensive freshman to earn the honor since running back LaDarius Perkins on Nov. 27, 2010, and the first overall student-athlete to win the laurel since linebacker Leo Lewis' performance in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28, 2016.

The Charlotte, North Carolina, native is the first Mississippi State true freshman quarterback to ever win the honor. Tyler Russell captured it as a redshirt freshman on Sept. 4, 2010, against Memphis.

Shrader accounted for 305 yards of total offense, including rushing for 125 yards on 11 carries. He was an efficient 17-of-22 for 180 yards through the air. Shrader accounted for all six of the Bulldogs' 20+ yard plays in the game, which included rushes of 49- and 36-yards.

He became the first MSU quarterback in school history to rush for over 100 yards and pass for over 100 yards in his first career start.

He probably should have been SEC offensive player of the week.

Yeah, not the guy that passed for 6 TDS in a conference game.
