That's correct. Only 1 other DC made less than Shoop....1

Yet he produced the top defense.

Aranda made 2.5 million (tops)and he produced the #16 defense in the nation.

VanGorder's defense gave up 44+ points per game (51st Defense) and made more than DOUBLE what Shoop made.

I'm not sure of his new deal, but I hope he did a little better!

007 - I don't see how you can link a billion articles a day on the political board but didn't link an actual article of relevance to MSU football.

Peter Sirmon couldn?t have messed up that defense. The players were that good

The man made $1.16M last year. It doesn't matter which bank account the money came from. Shoop is a grown man and can negotiate with the IB for his value. As Chef Dixon says, most DCs could have been successful with last year's group. Like the team, let's see the results on the field in year 2 before yelling about poverty stricken coaches.

Sir, Grantham took the players we had and made them to a top 10 defense from the 110th (not a typo) in the ONLY year he was here. But yeah.... The coach doesn't matter.

Actually he made WAY more than that with his investments. But what the HELL does that have to do with what MSU paid him? Touchy much?

That's actually not true. Sirmon did not have Abrams, Sweat, Gay, or Thompson. Those 4 were a big part of the turn around in 2017 - in addition to Grantham. You put those 4 on Sirmon's defense and it would be a ton better than 110th

Eh. Would it be have been better? Yeah, probably. But only Sweat was a consistent starter all year from that group. Abram was an important factor, Thompson played a decent role, and Gay was mostly a sub used somewhat sparingly.

Would it have been close to top 10? No.

Abram was #2 in tackles and would have had a huge impact on our terrible back 4. Sweat had 10.5 sacks and 15.5 TFLs. Thompson was our #7 tackler and an All-SEC Freshman and #3 in TFLs among SEC freshman. Gay was strong depth.

No, probably not Top 10 - but probably closer to the 35-50 range that most of Mullen's defenses were. That would have made a major impact on the outcomes in 2016.

So he was paid a total of $400K by MSU or was that what was paid by the IHL?

Be careful. YOu might be suggesting that new comers to the team can actually step up.......???

But I agree. Those guys made a difference. But from 110th to 10th... That's coaching.

Hindsight is a bitch. What I'm saying is the $400K was a one year negotiated deal wrapped around Shoop's Tenn package not MSU being cheap. It was a win-win for both parties.

So are the others way overpaid? McGriff at $1.1M is soooooo laughable.

Are we giving Shoop a big raise this year, or is he still on the Tennessee buyout money?

RocketDawg

Shoop's scoring defense was only 0.1 point worse than Venables'. Given Clemson's easy schedule, I'd say Shoop should be #1.

Yes!

@ Rocket, he has already signed a 2 year deal, details have not been disclosed. His buy out was not the reason we got him cheap. We got him cheap because of the horrible defenses he had at UT with little to no improvement.

This is a prove it year for him. Let's see if these young guys step up and shock some people
