Yesterday was the first time Stevens has even practiced with us. Doesn?t send a great message to automatically make the guy your first team QB before he?s even stepped on the practice field one time, unless you?re talking about someone more proven transferring in (Jalen Hurts or Kelly Bryant, for instance). I fully expect him to win the job but it would be silly to just flat out give it to him on day one of camp.

Same deal with Zuber running third team WR. That won?t stick either, but you?ve gotta show at least a little respect to the guys who have been here last year and in the Spring.

The issue is we have a lot of returning guys who HAVE seen constant SEC competition (specifically at receiver) and they have mostly not looked like SEC caliber players themselves. Zuber was a good receiver in the Big 12, I am not convinced that many of our receivers from the last two years would start in the Sun Belt. Zuber isn’t exactly trying to win a starting spot over Eric Moulds or Fred Ross.

I won’t rule out KT starting eventually if Stevens were to struggle, but Stevens was Joe’s guy at Penn State and I have a really hard time believing that the job isn’t his for the taking as long as he doesn’t lay an egg in fall camp.

McSorely was a great college QB. There were many times that Stevens was on the field with McSorely and Saquan. To even be on the field with those 2 says a lot about him. Im not giving him the heisman yet either but he is a good player

That’s very misleading. McSorley was one of the best QBs in college football for three years, where he got drafted doesn’t change that. There are lots of guys drafted in the 6th round or later that were really good in college and ended up being good in the NFL too. And to say he “couldn’t beat out” Clifford is inaccurate. Stevens was QB1 entering the Spring, then missed the Spring due to injury, and he left when Franklin declared it an open competition after promising him for years that he would be the guy. He left before the situation played itself out, but he still very possibly would’ve been the starter at Penn State. He just didn’t want to stick around for a maybe.

I don’t disagree with the notion that he hasn’t proven much yet, but let’s not misrepresent what actually happened with him at Penn State.

The issue is we have a lot of returning guys who HAVE seen constant SEC competition (specifically at receiver) and they have mostly not looked like SEC caliber players themselves. Zuber was a good receiver in the Big 12, I am not convinced that many of our receivers from the last two years would start in the Sun Belt. Zuber isn’t exactly trying to win a starting spot over Eric Moulds or Fred Ross.

I won’t rule out KT starting eventually if Stevens were to struggle, but Stevens was Joe’s guy at Penn State and I have a really hard time believing that the job isn’t his for the taking as long as he doesn’t lay an egg in fall camp.

Assuming that KT is suspended for the first two games will make it a lot easier to redshirt KT too. We didn't bring in Stevens for depth purposes. And I doubt he would have come to MSU if we had a definite starting QB in place.

He will play him in some packages to get both on the field at the same time and in some garbage time. Unless Stevens sucks KT will not play other than that IMO.

Snowflakes, get your panties out of a wad. No one is saying McSorely or Stephens are scrubs. Neither are 5-star stud QBs though. And Stephens was very concerned he couldn't beat out the younger competition, we can certainly deduce that from the fact that he transferred so late in the game. Stephens was essentially PSU's KT. Hopefully, he comes in and lights it up for us. Joe has no confidence in KT.

Some of it is how the depth chart is being written. I'm sure we'll see some three LB sets like last year and that of course means Leo, Erroll, and Willie on the field at the same time. It's semantics.

It's personal preference but if I was making out the depth chart for us it would have four DL, three LB, two CB, two S, and then the Nickel. I wouldn't be surprised if the scoreboard lists Leo, Erroll, WG, and Cole all as starters on gameday.

He played like a scrub last year. Just turn on any of our SEC games and watch him. He was really bad in the Texas A&M game. If you just watch our defense you won't notice because we had so many other playmakers, but focus on his reps and you will be surprised at how often he just gets blocked or jogs around the play. I do hope he's had a great offseason because having a capable backup to Willie would be huge, particularly since our DTs won't be as good.

The suspension hasn't been announced to the public it would give our opponent a heads up. It also would make the coach look bad. So playing it close to the vest makes sense. It's a pure PR move. However, Leo could have his best spring and he should STILL back WG up. I still expect them all to be on the field together.

Outside of maybe the Kansas State game, we will only have three LB's on the field at the same time in goal line and other short yardage situations... maybe not even then. Everyone runs 3 receivers as part of their base offense these days, even Alabama and LSU. Last year we ran dime way more than we ever had 3 LBs. Not saying we won't ever have them on the field together, but if we do it will be well less than 5% of the snaps.

Do you really believe a coach is monitoring a message board to gather game planning? Truthfully, nothing has been announced. A competing team would be wise to prepare for what he knows and that's two Qb's prepared to play.

I do think it's reasonable for Joe not to want to make it obvious KT is suspended at this point so it's not a distraction and talked about all camp. He'll face that with the media soon enough, but there's nothing to gain by tipping his hand at this point. He did the same with Nick last year. Leo the senior getting the first in line reps with the 1s is hardly noteworthy except for State football nerds like us. On the other hand our media would pounce if they saw TS taking all the first team reps at QB. The first week of practice. Either way, I don't think this is a big deal. Either Leo has pulled a 180 his senior year or he hasn't and Willie will take over like he did the last half of the year last year. Too early to tell.

Tommy isn't taking first team reps because he has not been on the team long enough to prove anything. That's the only reason he isn't taking first team reps yet. If they throw him in there as the #1 qb as soon as he steps on campus that could divide the team severely. He has to prove himself at least in some scrimmages before they just throw him the job. It has been reported by everyone on 247 that Leo has had an outstanding spring and summer. I'm sure both will play a ton, just like last year.
