Me and dad decided to go fish Sunday and hit it hard. We had flat seas and a rising tide from 6am-330pm. As everyone knows the Bonnet Carre Spillway has been opened again and is introducing a lot of freshwater in the sound so if we were fishing for trout we had to go far. The gameplan was don?t stop until Brush Island (25 miles from Bay Bridge) and continue our way south until we found clean enough water. And if all else fails, go to plan redfish. With that tide rising all day I knew my 4-5 ponds in the Oyster Bay area back up north would have plenty of water for afternoon fishing.

We were already in Louisiana when the sun peeked over after leaving at 5. The water by Little Bayou Pierre looked like farm pond water as we passed it. At Brush it was no better. Tons of river debris including grass and wood floating at Brush. We gave Brush a shot. I threw topwater and nothing. Wasted 10 mins trying to get a tailing red to eat with no success. Went to Martin Island. Same. Went all the way to Comfort Island and the water was ok for trout but there were still river Lillie?s floating at damn Comfort Island. After no trout at Comfort we ran West to Treasure Bay and hit some ponds for redfish. Saw 6-7 and had 1 lazily
swipe at my bait but didn?t connect. It?s 11am, we?re roughly 60 miles from the dock and we haven?t caught a fish. Plan switched to my ponds up in the north part of the marsh so we started the roughly hour ride there.

As I expected from earlier in the day the ponds up more my way had plenty of water, albeit fresh water. We went to work and landed 19 reds and missed a few. We kept our 10 fish limit and headed back to the dock at Bay Marina.

Some folks will look at all those miles and think we?re insane to do all that for some redfish but half the fun is the adventure. That was my first time fishing Comfort Island and it?s a cool spot. It was covered in mangroves like around Grand Isle. Don?t get that in the area of the marsh I fish. Had never fished Treasure Bay and it was cool getting in some ponds I?ve studied on maps despite not catching anything. Also dropped by Turtle Pen Isle and haven?t been there in 4 years.

In a nutshell, fresh water is everywhere. You can?t get away from it. If you?re on the west and don?t fish for reds you might as well trailer your boat to somewhere else. Or if you like reds like we do, go have fun. They?re there and eating.

Thanks man. One of my favorite things to do is study maps and then go find said areas.
