Jake is 63 hits away from the NCAA record, for hits in a Career, with a likely max of 20 games left. So that's just not going to happen. But the Game Notes this past weekend found the top 12 for Career NCAA hits, so we CAN watch to see just how high he gets.
With his 7 hits this weekend, he is at 355 and now tied for 12th place.

Career Hits - NCAA
1. Phil Stephenson, Wichita State (1979-82) 418
2. Khalil Greene, Clemson (1999-2002) 403
3. Steve Stanley, Notre Dame (1999-2002) 385
4. John Fishel, Cal State Fullerton (1982-85) 379
5. Jim Thomas, Wichita State (1979-82) 373
6. Tim Raley, Wichita State (1984-87) 370
7. John Gall, Stanford (1997-2000) 368
8. Jake Weber, NC State (1995-98) 366
9. Philip Hartig, The Citadel (1998-2001) 360
10. Gary Cooper, BYU (1983-86) 359
11. Sam Fuld, Stanford (2001-04) 356
12t. Sonny Meade, The Citadel (2006-09) 355
12t. Chris Campbell, Col. of Charleston (2004-07) 355
12t. Jake Mangum , Mississippi State (2016-current) 355

If he maintains his career hit rate of 1.47 he should end up in the 390 range and would be 3rd in history.

Next, a few more MSU records he should break.
Jake will have the most career at bats by a bulldog in the next 3-4 games likely. He was at 963 going into the weekend and had 12 Ab's (7 hits) and sits at 975. The record is J Rea at 998.
Mangum will also set the record for most career games played in our 2nd game of the SEC Tournament. (10 games left in regular season, 11 back of the record held by Burke Masters at 251)

Jake will also have a great chance to shatter Career runs scored. He is currently at 208 runs which is 6th place after passing Brad Winkler and Jrea this weekend. He needs 25 runs to break the record.
1. Dan Van Cleve (1981-85) 232
2. Burke Masters (1987-90) 227
3. Rafael Palmeiro (1983-85) 224
4. Travis Chapman (1997-2000) 221
5. Richard Lee (1995-98) 219
6. Jake Mangum (2016-cur) 208

Jake is in a doubles drought of late, so not sure if he will break the career doubles record held by Travis Chapman with 71. But he's tied at 2nd place with 66.

and one more I just saw. Jake had 101 hits in a season last year which is 4th best in MSU history. At 80 hits now, he would need to get 28 more hits to break Adam Frazier's record of 107 in 2013.

It's not really that crazy. These guys are all going to be 4-year guys, who by definition are less draft-worthy. Greene was taken in the 1st round and played in the majors for a while, but he had an absolute monster of a senior year that significantly boosted his draft stock.

1. Phil Stephenson, Wichita State (1979-82) Cups of coffee 3 seasons with the Cubs and Padres - 1 full season with the Pads. If you are old enough to remember this guy, you are baffled that he didn't make it.
2. Khalil Greene, Clemson (1999-2002) 403 - Decent 6 seasons with Padres, 1 with Cards - 2nd in ROY voting in '04
3. Steve Stanley, Notre Dame (1999-2002) 385 - Never made the show

Well 2 of those , 1 and 5, were in 79-82. 79 they played 80 games, 82 they played 87 games and were CWS runners up. No rules about how many games you could play back then.

To have this many hits, you have to play four years. So you have to be good enough to play a lot as a true freshman and hit for a high average, but not good enough to get snapped up after three years.

Updates Post Memphis game - 5/8/2019

-Now at 363 career hits. Good for 9th place in NCAA history. With a run to the CWS a minimum of 16 games remain, putting Jake around 398-400 hits. Within striking distance of 2nd place at 403
-Now at 88 hits on the season. 20 hits away from breaking the single season hits record held by Adam Frazier.
-Now has 990 Career At Bat's. So he is 9 Ab's away from claiming that record from JRea.
-Scored twice tonight and is up to 212 runs in his career. Still in 6th place and needs 21 runs to break the record.
-Hit a double tonight to claim 2nd place with 67 career doubles. 4 behind Travis Chapman
- Correction. Jake is now at 465 total bases, 7th place. I think he lands at 3rd place overall which is currently Travis Chapman at 482. 2nd place is Raffy at 530. Richard Lee holds the record at 544. Jake would need to hit a triple every at bat to reach raffy.

He is now in 3rd place in SEC History, Behind Jason Williams at 1019 and Preston Tucker at 1035.
No idea presently where that ranks in NCAA history. Record is 1,114 - John Fishel, Cal St. Fullerson 82-85 (295 games)

-Now at 368 career hits. Now tied for 7th place in NCAA history.

-Now at 93 hits on the season. 15 hits away from breaking the MSU single season hits record held by Adam Frazier. (108 hits would be tied for 12th in SEC History...record is 120 by Drew Meyer, USC in 02) NCAA Record is 142 by Tim Barker, UCF, 1985.

-Is up to 214 runs in his career. Still in 6th place and needs 19 runs to break the record. He is now tied at 26th place in SEC History. If he breaks the MSU record, he would at least be tied for 9th place.

-Hit two doubles on the weekend, now has 69 career doubles. 3 from breaking Travis Chapman's record. (Chapman is tied for 4th most doubles in SEC career, 3rd place is 72 and owned by Chris Burke, TN).

- Jake is now at 472 total bases, 5th place, passing Manny and Connor Powers. He is now 10 total bases from tying 3rd place overall which is currently Travis Chapman at 482. 2nd place is Raffy at 530. Richard Lee holds the record at 544. Jake would need to hit a triple every at bat to reach raffy.

-Jake has played in 247 games, which is 4th most in MSU history. He is 5 games away from breaking Burke Masters record at 251. He will break it in the first SEC tournament game.

The total bases is what's so impressive. Look at the names he's near. All big homer guys. Jake is a contact hitter. The fact he's even being mentioned in the conversation for total bases is crazy. Switch 10 singles for 10 homers over his career and he would have 30 additional bases and be in the conversation to break that record.

Not saying that's what I wanted from him, but the insanity of a predominantly singles hitter being that close to guys like Raffy and Lee is insanely impressive.

ScoobaDawg

another note about how good Jake is... his career BA is .367. that is the 5th best in MSU history. with so many at bats in his career, it's hard to move that number around much but he could possibly climb to .370 and pass 4th which is Jimmy Bragan. He would need a really hot hitting streak to catch Raffy at 3rd (.372) and stay there.

One other note I took from todays game notes

"The senior owns at least one hit in 193 of 228 games started(84.6%), 201 of 243 games with at least one plate appearances(82.7%) and 201 of 247 games played (81.3%)"
"Has reached base in 208 of 228 games started (91.2%), 218 of243 games with at least one plate appearances (89.7%) and218 of 247 games played (88.2%)"
"Along those same lines, Mangum has posted 107 careermulti-hit games, which gives him multiple hits in 43.3% of hiscareer games played."

Just so impressive.

Awesome Scoob. Been fun to follow.

No prob.. would love to see him end up with about 390 hits. but over the next 14 more to get to 386 would do a lot of things. It would put him in 3rd place in ncaa hits hits, likely give him a double or two, to break that msu record. Would break the msu single season hit record. Would place him in 3rd place in msu history in total bases. would likely break the msu career run records and put him in the sec top 10.

Just amazing... we have to have his bat to get to OMAHA. and the records watching will just be a fun part to watch. we all know what the major goal is.
