Was channel surfing and ran across the women's bowling NCAA Championship on ESPNU between Vanderbilt and Stephen F. Austin. Was wondering if we have a team. I didn't know anybody did. Do they give scholarships?

We don't have it, but Vandy holds championships in this sport I believe. I don't know of any other school in the league that has bowling.

No other sec school has bowling. Vandy competes in the southland conference for bowling. There are only 80 teams across D1,2,and 3. they all compete against each other for the national championship.

It is one of vandys official school sports meaning they get scholarships. but they also don't compete in volleyball or softball. they also have a lacrosse team that competes in the American Athletic Conference (along with florida)

It was over before I turned back to check, but I think Stephen F. Austin won. Didn't we play them in football last year?

I wish we did have both men's and women's bowling team. Would only cost a few scholarships. Since I average 235, I probably could have made it.

They were doing a team thing, not one-on-one. I never figured out how they knew whose turn it was. Those gals were pretty good though ... not what you normally see.

It looks like Nebraska and Vanderbilt are the only P5 schools who participate in NCAA women's bowling. With a relatively modest investment, we could probably become a national power and compete for titles:

......and that is an embarrassment to the rest of the SEC

I don't know RD FS1 has the PBA matches every week and they do have some hotties in the crowd.

Define investment. Just to add the team. you would need A) Scholarships. B)A facility.
C) another sport added to the men's side. (no men's bowling is NOT a sanctioned sport). D) a facility for said sport.... and no it won't be men's soccer.

What I meant is that they were good bowlers, and not the stereotypical awkwardness most girls have when trying to bowl. And yes, there were some cuties on the team.

I'd have trouble supporting scholarships for bowling though.

When I was in school, there was a bowling alley (maybe 10 or so lanes) in the basement of the union, along with several pool and snooker tables (50 cents/hour). Are those still there? The school bookstore was on the ground floor too.

I had my best game ever there ... 247. I had all strikes through 9, then had an open in the tenth, so it could have been much higher. I haven't been bowling in about 30 years. It'd probably kill my back now.

You beat me to you, Rocket. We had leagues at the bowling alley in the Union, it was pretty cool. Shamed they closed it with the renovation of the Union. Seems like it was a $1.00 a game plus 35 cents for the shoes. Prices a poor student could love.

Scooba we used to have a bowling alley in the Union is that gone? I know that not a true facility but I was just curious.

ETA: Sorry I didn't see the 2 posts just above, before I asked the question.

Is there a bowling alley in Starkville now? Numerous people have mentioned that the bowling alley in the Union was closed either before or due to the renovation to the Union.

Bulldog Lanes was closed at some point after I left in the early 2000s. Did someone open a new one somewhere? I just looked on Google maps and it looks like the old Bulldog Lanes is Club4Fitness and the Hunt Club is a Bargain Hunt which is similar to TJ Maxx.

No, and I doubt there will ever be another one in town.

It is a shame, I loved getting the pitchers of beer and bowling at Bulldog Lanes.
