Jim Leyland's retirement got me thinking about this. Here's mine:

1. Tony La Russa
2. Casey Stengall
3. Joe Torre
4. John McGraw
5. Joe McCarthy

Obviously Connie Mack could have a claim, but he managed for 50 years so it's hard not to have a bunch of records if you've managed for that long. I hesitated putting McCarthy on the list because anyone could have won with the talent he had, but his numbers were great regardless.

I'm sure I'm leaving some off though.

I think Bobby Cox should be top 5.

Roooon Polk.**

1. Tony LaRussa- third on the all time wins list and has won World Titles in both leagues. Revolutionized how stats are used and how a pitching staff is used.

2. Casey Stengal- Led a dynasty and popularized platoon systems.

3. John McGraw- Multiple World Titles and is second on the all time wins list.

4. Joe McCarthy- has the highest winning percentage of all time.

5. Connie Mack- multiple world championships and most wins of all time.

Bobby Cox might be in my top 10, but he's not top 5.

He was moneyball before moneyball.

Most wins from 1970-1980?

Big Red Machine? Nope not the group of Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Pete Rose

Yanks, Pirates, Dodgers? Nope

Orioles. During this time where they won the most games they were 13th in pitcher WAR and 8th in FIP. So how'd he do it?

Pitching, defense, and the three run home run. Damn music to my ears.

Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger. 2 of the top defensive players of the era.
Ken Singleton, Boog Powell, and Mark Grich... Yeah who? All with 14% or higher BB rates during this time.

Earl Weaver did more with less than anyone. He was ahead of his time for sure.

Weaver was a great manager and the best at arguing with umpires along with Billy Martin- but he only has one World Championship. Which is why the Orioles are not held in the high esteem that the Reds, A's, Yankees, etc. of the 70's were.
