On Saturday Feb. 9th, Turner's Battery, the local civil war artillery unit, is having a day at our arsenal where we will be hosting members of other artillery batteries that participate in reenactments, living histories and live shoots with us. I asked Duffy, our founder, if I could come on here and mention it to so that anyone who may be interested in touring his museum, hearing a lecture given by him on any civil war artillery topic he happens to choose, learn about some of the equipment and maybe even someone who would be interested in joining our unit could come out.

Below is a link to some of the stuff you'll see and learn about at the arsenal.

Below is a link to Duffy firing the sweetgum motar he built. I believe he his filming part 2 of this video this coming weekend.

Here are a couple of videos showing us during a live-fire competition at Ft. Grayling Michigan several years ago and a night battle at the 145th anniversary of Chickamauga reenactment.

If you are interested in checking us out, give Duffy a call at the number on the website and he'll give you directions and tell you what time we're starting. Also, if you plan on coming, shoot me a message on here and I'll be on the lookout for you.

I would give the address but since Duffy doesn't have it on his website, I'd rather not without asking him first. But, it's just outside of Starkville. Parking is very limited so you'll probably have to park on the side of the road and walk a couple of hundred of feet. And, there are no facilities on-site but there is a gas station less than 5 minutes away.

I'm very interested. I dabble in photography. Any chance of a prime photo spot?

Another announcement I was about to post in the sports board: April 6th at Shiloh they are going to be playing Vuntage Baseball as part of the anniversary weekend. They will be using 1864 rules. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

You'll be able to get close-up photos of all of the equipment but not much chance of anything looking vintage with the men. Not really enough room out there and I don't know how many people will be in uniform. Some do show up in uniform though. Your best chance for a vintage photo will be when we do our yearly battery photo. I'll have to check our newsletter to see when that is and I'll let you know.

Cool. I'm still interested. I won 1st place several years ago in the Civil WAr Presrvation Trust's annual photo contest. It was a shot of a canon firing at Shiloh. I got extremely lucky and got not only a fantastic muzzle blast, I got the back flash from the vent hole. I've tried many times to duplicate it, I've only come close once.

Like this? I cheated though. I did a capture program on that night-firing link in my original post. LOL

Go to the arsenal link in the original post and call Duffy to get directions and time and come on out.

Yep. Gotta play both sides if you want to shoot a lot. We played both sides in the Shiloh movie and at the Vicksburg/Raymond 150th event, there were 3 battles 1. Raymond 2. Champion's Hill and 3. Grant's attack on the 2nd Texas lunette at Vicksburg which was his last attack before the siege started because he got his ass kicked at that battle. At that event, we were on the winning side in all 3 battles. LOL We were federal for battles 1 and 2 and confederate for #3. We have gone to Beauvoir but aren't this year. We alternate with another unit there between federal and confederate. We also do the Trail of Honor in Jackson every year as confederate.

The interesting thing about the Shiloh movie is that everybody you see, artillery, cavalry and infantry played both sides. When they show Ruggle's line when the confederate artillery attacked the Hornet's Nest, we were the last 2 cannons at the far end of the line from the cameras. Two days later when they filmed the union counter attack by Sherman and McClernand, they reversed the order and we got close-ups. There's actually a close-up of the back of my head stepping in and seating the round before we fired with the two generals on horseback behind our gun.

Here is a pic of me standing next to our target after the 1st day of live shooting at Ft. Grayling from the link in the original post. This was after 15 shots at 1200 yards through open iron sights. Actually, this wasn't too good. Instead of shooting on nice hard ground, they had put down a raised gravel berm. It was hard to make slight shifts of the gun because of the rocks and everyone there thought the softer ground was affecting accuracy. To prove that point, the next day was the money shoot. 15 shots at a civil war size sheet of newspaper tacked to a sheet of plywood at 1000 yards. Only shots that hit the newspaper counted. The team to our left had won it the previous year putting 12 of 15 through the newspaper. I think they hit the paper once the day we were there. And yes, civil war cannoneers on both sides were that accurate and this particular competition is based on an actual competition from the civil war.

We've also shot exploding rounds but unfortunately I missed that shoot. I was out of the country on a business trip. Our guys went to Ft. Sill and wore out an old deuce and a half from a quarter mile away.

From 3/4 mile away, that's pretty good. I had no idea they were that accurate.

My Great Great Grand father was with 1st Mississippi light artillery. Herron's Battery (Battery B). After Port Hudson they were paroled and they became a infantry company. They were on the train that crashed in Alabama. His unit was surrender at Spanish Fort Alabama. He was a prisoner of war and housed on ship island fort.
