Do I need to put chains on my tires here in Philadelphia?

I doubt it. Biggest concern won't be the snow. It'll be the possibility of a glaze of ice forming on bridges and roads once temps drop below freezing.

Tupelo is looking at slightly less snowfall accumulation but black ice threat will remain. Who gets a dusting and who gets 4" is all going to depend on where the snow bands set up, and that just can't be determined. Current thinking is more central MS as highlighted in the graphic above. Just my thinking is the average accumulation north of I20 will probably average 1.5"-2.5". This isn't the set up that typically brings us our significant snows. You need a Gulf low throwing moisture into existing cold air for that. This is an arctic clipper system where most of the precip will fall after the front passes as the cold air rushes in and literally squeezes the moisture out of the atmosphere. Once it wrings it all out then it's over where a Gulf system keeps pumping moisture in as long as it's in the area.

Maybe thatweather will counteract all this melting!

When would you predict these bad driving conditions starting? On the safe side....obviously I'm not expecting you to know exacts. I'd recommend being off the roads by ____ o'clock, for instance.

If it happens, I would think a couple hours after snowfall starts in an area. There's still some thinking this whole thing busts. I'm being optimistic that won't happen, though.

Gotcha. So if it happens, should I be ok if I'm home by 1 am tomorrow night , or could this thing potentially get icy earlier than that in some areas

About all I can do is look at that map above with the timing by the NWS. By 1:00am there could be some icy areas starting to form. I was just talking with a couple of local meteorologists and they are far from convinced this comes off as advertised. Guess we'll all find out in about 24 hours.
