I remember the '79 and '80 D that had Cooks, Keys, Collins, Jackson, a couple of DB's and various other subs who went on to start for us later. We went to two bowl games, when all bowl games were truly rewards and held the no. one team to 3 points. If we had an offense to go with that D it could have been a better team.

Also , remember Earnie barnes was on that same defensive line. He was starting for Colts in preseason before getting mad and walking out. George Wonsley was on that team and told me the story. Great story. That D was loaded! 2 first round picks, Cooks and Collins. Keys had very successful pro career.

Given how wide open offenses are now, compared to those days, I think it may be the best.

It'll be interesting to see how many players off this years D make an NFL roster, when it's all said and done.

In the 90s, we had some stout defenses!

It's hard to say since we dont play the game the same way though.

They were so much fun to watch. If we had a better offense we go undefeated. Hopefully we will have a team that can put it all together one day soon.

I agree. You have to take era into account given how much offenses and the game has changed since the 1980's and 1990's.

My personal favorites were 1994, 1998, and of course 1999. 1996 and 1997 had their moments as well. 1996 shut out Northeast Louisiana and Ole Miss while scoring almost all the points in the Egg Bowl and beat Bama for the first time since 1980. And then 1997 shut out Auburn on the road in a year where Auburn won the SEC West.
