View Full Version : Did we have a bad day? Place has a real negative vibe

I don't follow recruiting very closely. Just keep up with team ranking and headlines.

I know we lost a couple of corners today and that sucks, but is the rest of the class a disappointment? I know rankings are not all that matters but do we expect to fall from where we are by February?

Looking at the past 10 years, this class is ranked favorably. Only one other top 20 finish in 2015.

2019 = currently = 19
2018 = 27
2017 = 24
2016 = 28
2015 = 18
2014 = 36
2013 = 24
2012 = 22
2011 = 41
2010 = 30

I also understand that this was a good year in Mississippi. Is that the reason for so much negativity? I guess I understand that, but I also assume this coaching staff will get better in recruiting once they learn the area better.

Just by looking at the rankings I don't feel bad, but should I be concerned?

When Pickering and Moore sign everyone will feel better. Also 3 really big targets out there left that we are in the game on.

Some people are just chicken littles man

Be concerned if we have a losing season in 3 or 4 years. Quit reading or at least don't take to heart the readings of the "ED Internet Coaches". They don't know like u or I for now who this class will be until a few years.

Coach them up Joe!

After the baseball coaching hire I learned not to take things to heart here. And also do not believe any rumors or claims from sources. All our sources are fake

But I am curious why so many seemed disappointed.

We are 19th with 22 commits But we only had 14 sign today. And even though we knew it was coming, Hall and Brooks went elsewhere and we probably lost DJ James.

It's recruiting. MSU people always pay more attention to who didn't want to come to MSU than those who do. It's insane and actually hurts us in recruiting, especially now in the interval between the two signing days. We can't help acting like poor old whooped down MSU. It never changes.

No we didn't have a bad day. One kid committed to us ended up at Arkansas. And we all knew he was going there. Other than that we signed a bunch of kids we knew we would.

The only true surprise is that DJ James is waiting to sign. Still committed but waiting on a Bama spot to open. But some on this board though today was a disaster because we didn't get a kid that wasn't committed to us and we lost a kid we already knew we were losing.

So a typical day in the life of our fan base during recruiting season.

Nah, we're fine. The melt down is up north. We're ahead of them in recruiting rankings. They are Freaking. Out.

If we have losing seasons in 3 or 4 years, it'll be too late, at which point recruiting at a level to get us back to just 7 Ws becomes that much harder.

Fwiw, I don't think this class is a bust or a failure. It is one of the best classes we've had ever (or at least since crootin' rankings became a thing). But it's kinda naive to say you can't judge the class until we see if they flop. And I think most of us want to take a step up and regularly compete with LSU and auburn for 2nd in the west, not regularly compete with A&M, OM, and Arkansas for 4th. That takes upping our overall talent, not just signing a few big names.

Not really a fair post. 24 hours ago, we thought Brooks, James, and Walker were signing with us. None did. We didn't land Hall even though a lot of recruiting experts said we were in the game. We didn't flip anyone today. We only signed 14 total. This is to take nothing away from the 14 kids who signed, but it was a ho-hum kind of day.

Yes, our boards are nothing compared to the melt at Ole Miss. The most exciting news of the day for a lot of state fans were Dean and Raydar not signing at Ole Miss. Hopefully Mingo takes a logical look at their situation and makes the decision to sign with MSU.

It wasn't really a bad day in terms of effecting future wins and losses but it was a frustrating reality check. Many of us, me included, want to believe that 9 straight bowl games, JoMo, and potentially tying Alabama for the most pro bowlers means something and would enable MSU to rise above the typical bullshit we deal with in recruiting and certainly above Arkansas. Today was a reality check that we have not risen above that yet and causes me and others to question what exactly would make that happen.

Objectively not a bad day, but absolutely a frustrating reality check. For me at least.

Consider this when rating this class...
# of 4-stars or better in miss:
2019 = 16

2015 = 7

I think you were the only one that thought Brooks was signing with us. And if anyone thought Hall was signing with us ornfelt really good about it they were wishing. Writing on the wall with Brooks for a long time. And we didn't have to flip anyone. We took care of that when we got Cross 2 weeks ago.

This staff will work hard over the next month and a half but we signed a lot of good kids today and if you pay attention to recruiting the only thing that really sucked about today was James.

sobering. that really adds some context to the situation. But signing Pickering, Moore, and maybe being able to flip Mingo or Plumlee would certainly make things better.

It could certainly go up. James is really good but only an 85 3 star in the rankings.

I didn't say it couldn't. I said it would. We lose Payton and James off committed list. And that's assuming no one else. I'll bet we don't end up top 20. And I know as someone pointed out the difference between 15-20 20-25 isn't that big. But we still are and always will be in the back end of the league. Is what it is.

My main concern is how long will it take for our coaches to adjust to SEC recruiting and gameday and will we keep enough continuity to get in a good recruiting spot.

Even if we didn't lose a couple of guys today the reality is that 3 of the top 4 current recruiting classes belong to SEC West teams with the other being an East team.

Yes, if we had signed and kept James and Emerson then Brooks wouldn't have been given a second thought. Its essentially feeling like we've lost all 3 CB commits in the final 72 hours that is so frustrating. James was the best of the 3 but none were 'can't miss' recruits but now we have to go to our plan D and E to even sign a true CB. i'm hearing now we will give both Jarrion Jones and Marcus Murphy a look at CB.

That's puts things in some prespective. I do believe we are going to lose some of our high stars to Bama. Just no way to compete with that machine with some players

How many of the top 20 players in the state did we sign? How does that compare?

Per 247 we signed 3. W 3 committed. So if we get all then 6 of the top 17. Two of which are potential grade casualties. Which we should know more about that soon.
ETA- they have Purvis 23rd and I think in 4-5 years will prove to be way low. Underrated

# of 4-stars or better in miss:
2019 = 16 - got 5, with shot at 4 more
2018 = 4 - got 2
2017 = 7 - got 2
2016 = 11 -got 3
2015 = 7 - got 4
2014 = 8 - got 3

So people are calling it a failure when we have more signed/committed 4*+ in state guys then any of those years listed.
And we still are in the game for 4 more? Some people need some perspective. Yeah, this was a big year - and big years bring out all the other schools.

I know it’s not the same because their class is crazy good - but there are 40 4*+ players in GA this year. You know how many UGA has? 5. Auburn has 6 4*+ guys from GA this year. We aren’t going to lasso the state - no one does in the SEC.
