In the 1870's, when America was being restored bigger and better because of great Americans like Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, there was a reaction to this progress. In spite of many former Confederates who advocated the eventual empowerment of the former slaves and helping them become members of American society, there were forces at Ole Miss who worked to keep them in defacto slavery for another 100 years.
J.Z. George and LQC Lamar were part of this...and they were Ole Miss through and through.
