Gotta pay the man. The program can't afford this right now.

If he wants to a HC, not sure we can pay enough to match that

Cooterpoot

He's already at $1.2M. Umass paid $2.25M to their HC, so they're probably looking at $2.5M. I seriously doubt we pay him what Aranda makes at LSU ($2.5M- highest). Grantham is over $1.3M at FL. Shoop is just outside of the top 10 paid asst. in the country now. Not a lot more we can do.

If he gets offered a HC job he should take it. If they don't offer he'll be back.

he does. Hell he wanted the "William and Mary head job, so I'm certain he would want this one, way better job.

I'd hate to lose Shoop but if he's offered a HC job, and takes it I wish him the best. Can't fault a man for turning down a head job.

If we lose him then we need to throw the kitchen sink at Grantham

I think that was Whipple entire contract...he was around $450,000 a season, I believe

hahaha. he's not leaving dan, at least not to come back, he gets paid plenty.

Prediction? Pain.

You're right. Per USA Today, Whipple's base salary at UMass was $500,000.

http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/

I've never been able to find Shoop's salary at State, but at UT, he was making over $1,000,000, which put his salary in the top 10 or 15 nationally for assistant coaches. I assume we're paying him in the same ballpark.

ETA: Shoop was making $1,155,500 at UT last year, which gave him the 10th highest assistant-coach salary in the NCAA. Grantham, for what it's worth, has a 3-year, $4,470,000 contract with UF. Here's (https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidching/2018/07/24/led-by-dave-aranda-and-brent-venables-at-least-18-assistant-coaches-will-make-1-million-in-2018/#387f78103b24) the link.

Throw the kitchen sink at the safeties coach that called the bowl game!

Was Shoop let go at Tennessee? I doubt he took big pay cut to come with Moorhead unless he had to leave.

I'll worry about Shoop leaving when it happens. He may not be offered the job. Between his HC record and his lawsuit with a previous employer, not exactly stellar resume building.

Pass...as a last resort on the cheap? I guess maybe?, but there is no way I throw kitchen sink to get English. I wouldn’t even throw a plastic bowl to get him much less the whole kitchen skin.

Absolutely! The comments in this thread illustrate why coaches salaries are where they are today. We didn't think Grantham was replaceable, yet upgraded with Shoop. I'm sure with what we pay, we can find a suitable replacement. We should also give credit to Moorhead for taking less to pay his assistants more.

If this were a Collins situation and he took a lateral move, then I would be upset (although I can't fault Collins as I probably wouldn't be able to work with Mullen either). Regardless, people get promoted and we should want that for our coaches.

Umass paid $2.25M to their HC, so they're probably looking at $2.5M. .

The chart I saw had the Umass coach at 550k.

I’m sure Coach Shoop would jump at the chance to be HC , but Umass May have to open up the check book to get him and I doubt they do that .
They will find someone just as eager to be a HC at a much cheaper price. IMO

To add Coach Baker is someone else extremely important for this defense the last couple of years.
Need to pay this man and hope he stays as long as possible

As I said the guy wanted the William and mart head job. I doubt money is a big deal honestly. Cause I know they aren't paying crap. Which makes one wonder, why would umass hire him if William Mary won't??

I think most mid majors need/want offensive guys. They have to sell tickets and differentiate themselves in a league in which the talent level is mostly the same.

When did he pursue W&M? If while at tenn, that was lowest point for his stock

Shoop would take atleast a half million dollar pay cut to go to umass, I don't see it happening.

Just like tony Hughes taking a huge payout to go to JSU and he never ever made a million in a year. It happens

I'm not totally sold on Grantham. It seems he does well for a few years, then sort of starts fading. I really like Shoop's gameplan on D. He appears to be the real deal. I would like to see him return for at least one year and see what he does with a lot less defensive talent. If he were to come back with a top 20 defense next year......then he is for real!

I hope he doesn't leave but at the we've gone through DC the past few years then the name plate on the DC office door needs to be a dry erase board.

Mjoelner,

Was this the one you were talking about wanting to post about leaving for a head job?

I've grown to love the guy over the season. Yes, he was given a great squad to begin with but he's coached up that great group of players. Most fun defense to watch since the 90s.

But I also love his pressers. Honest, forthcoming and informative - but I'm amused with his pained facial expressions during normal conversation. Reminds me of some comedian that escapes me.

If Shoops takes a HC position I'm sure JoMo has someone in mind as his replacement. JoMo seems to have put a good coaching staff together so I trust him to get another good DC if it comes to that.
