I did a line graph of our recruiting from 2005-2018 & the gist of it is: we've done a ton to build quality depth & enhance our chances of reloading from year but have done very little to raise our ceiling. Basically our recruiting has become more consistent & less volatile from year to year, which leads to more depth across the roster, but we've done very little to raise the ceiling of our program. Instead of hitting our head on the ceiling every 5 years, we are now hitting our head on the ceiling every 2/3 years but there is a ceiling nonetheless. This is obviously good for the program to maintain a steady growth, but can get frustrating as well.

I think what frustrates most people about this season isn't that we've lost 3 games, it's that we lost 3 games with the most talented roster in MSU history. The good news, however, is that our recent consistency in recruiting should indicate that we should have more years with this type of talent on the roster than in past eras. As we discussed a few days ago, the 2019 defense, while it will take a step back, it's not a rebuilding situation. Throw that in with most of our skill talent returning, &, if we can get a QB to step up, that team can surprise some people.

By looking at this chart, while it's obviously important for MSU to raise it's recruiting profile, it's just as pertinent for MSU to maintain consistency in it's recruiting. Even when looking at this chart, there is no reason we should every finish below 25 in recruiting. We've come along way with consistency in recruiting, but need to do even better.
