What is cool about that picture is that the stadium was being expanded but wasn?t finished. Forgot about that. I was 13. Bond became a legend that day.

I've still got a copy of that sports illustrated somewhere! I'll never forget that day! Great day in State history!

Bond never lost to LSU. Let that sink in. My dad and I were the 1st on the field after the final snap that was never a snap. I was the 1st fan Kent Hull Hugged and nearly killed on the field. When you are 5'7'' , 135lbs, be cautious when getting bear hugged by an exuberant football guy in pads.

That Picture is AWESOME... Fantastic Memories.

You were nerdish, eh?***

Can you imagine us beating a team like that now? The media coverage would be crazy. I remember the SI football preview for the next year... seems like we were ranked around 16-18 and they had one tiny little pic of Bellard and Cooks jogging on the football field. I remember I was so 17'n ecstatic to see MSU mentioned in SI and a picture to boot!

No doubt Turf. Wow have times changed. Media shit and all. I remember losing to MO that year as I was at that 17 fest. I think we won the Egg that year, not sure. I do know we pissed away tons of Eggs during a long period of time.

If I am correct. He is the only quarterback in history to beat LSU four times.

Just messing... it was the times. It's kinda funny how so few ppl wore bulldog stuff to the games back then. Prob cause there were 10 different shades of maroon at Bulldog Sporting Goods.

Is that Scott Field or in Jackson? I think in '80 they still played in Jackson and it doesn't look like Davis Wade.

It just wasn't done back then. Most people "dressed up" to go to games just a few years earlier -- jackets and ties for guys, dresses for the gals. Looks like by 1980 dressing was becoming a little less formal than it was a few years earlier. Even going to class guys wore shirts and slacks (no jeans) and girls wore skirts and dresses. At least a few years earlier, they weren't allowed to wear pants.

Thank goodness. It was rough spending $5 on a ticket and driving all the way to Jackson when you could hardly afford to eat, let alone put gas in your car.

Amazing that such a big game was played at a SWAC stadium.

Ole Miss's biggest win occurred there also against Notre Dame.

The Vet is a dump- but it's historically significant. Walter Payton and Jerry Rice played there as well. Probably Brett Favre as well but I'm not 100% on that. I think the largest ever attended college football game in Mississippi was the 1980 Egg Bowl played there- which we won as well.

My parents were at the 1980 Alabama game. I wasn't though- I was three at the time and hanging out with some baby-sitter.

Probably a good decision on my parents part since I doubt I would have appreciated the moment.

Lets not forget the Soul Bowl! Archie 'The Gunslinger' Cooley from MVSU, running 'The Satellite Express' featuring Willie Totten and Jerry Rice. Marino 'The Godfather' Casem from Alcorn with a bad ass defense featuring Ike Holt. That was the funnest game I have ever been to.

To many this is the greatest game in MSU history. It was a 6-3 a fair. Bama was number one. Let me ask you this. If the 3-2 game with Auburn was a little different and Auburn was number 1 and we won the game 3-2 would our perspective of that game be great?

Of course. Anytime you beat #1 it's special.

1981 USM vs MSU was largest recorded crowd at the stadium 64,112

But many argue the 1984 Valley vs Alcorn had more in attendance although there is no official number for that game.
