Had to use Overseas for you squibbies and jarheads. I was in the Army from 83-94. Started out as a Grunt officer in the 1/505 82nd abn Div and as an Army Aviator/Huey Driver in the MSARNG. Yes being a Aviator def had its advantages.

Graduated from High School in 84 went to State. Dropped out and joined the Marine Corp in 86. Got out in 1990 went back to Miss State but joined the Marine Reserve. They kept sending me every other weekend to 29 Palms. I joked with one of my history professor when she asked why I was going to the desert every other weekend that the United States will be going to war with Iraq really soon. By gosh we did and my MOS did not have enough so I was pulled back into Active Duty and went to Desert Storm. Came back, I was married and busted my ass and graduated from State in 1992. My dad and uncle were Marines.

My MOS was 0861. Marine Artillery Scout Observer. I was always with the infantry. I called all Naval and Artillery fire. Sometimes Mortar and air. I had to learn to do it all.

Two of my dads brothers were in the Navy, one in the Marines and one in the Air Force. My dad served in Vietnam and his older brother served in the Korean War.
I had two cousin who were Marines.

My little brother was in the Navy.
One great uncle who served in the Army. He was the Army version of my MOS.. He went ashore on D-Day. I have his mustard blanket he carried with him. I treasure it like gold.

This is all on my dads family. We are Mormons and my dad had 12 brothers and sisters.

My mom had 8 brothers and sisters.
She had one brother who served in the navy.
I have one cousin who served in the Army.

I had three great uncles on my mom side who served in WWII. One in the army. Lost leg and one half his foot. Two in the navy, both at Pearl Harbor. One on the Oklahoma. Had third degree burns and was discharged.
The other was in jail on December 7th for being drunk. He was on the Arizona and never recovered mentally not being with his ship and shipmates. Finished the war but became a drunk had a hard life. When he was young he won the strongest man in Madison county contest.

Did you ever hear the story of a 8 inch bn out of Lejune I think, fire long one day and take out a Battery Cdr wife? She was driving along some perimter road when the shell hit near her car. I called BS on it till my cousin who was stationed at Lejune told me it did happen. This would've been in 85.

It could have happened But I think the marines started Phasing out the 8" and going to the 198's by then plus I want to say all the 8" were at 29 palms. When I was in Okinawa the impact area was on the other side of a city from the gun line. They fired over the city every time they fired. The local protested every time went out there to train.

Drank away my Bammer Skolly in late 80s and went to Parris Island Feb-May 1990... Got out of the Res. in 96. Activated for Gulf I but didn't make it over there.

With the advent of Youtube I like looking at all of the home movies that the vietnam vets upload. Their is one mesmorising one that this Huey crewchief did. 1. Joined US Army Reserve 06 DEC 1991. Went to basic and AIT after HS grad in 1992, then to MSU in JAN 1993.
2. Moved over to the MS ARNG in 1994, Bravo Comapny, 890th Engineer Battalion. Served there until 2000, when I moved to NY after grad school.
3. Back to the USAR in NY, Alpha Comany, 854th Engineer Battalion. We lost one of our squad leaders when the towers fell, he was a fire captain in NYC.
4. NOV 2002 - transferred to Charlie Company 479th Engineer Battalion for Operation Iraqi Freedom. We spent a year on active duty at Fort Hood training, but did not deploy.
5. 2004, went back to A/854 and gave up being an enlisted guy (was a Staff Sergant at the time) to commission as a 2LT in June 2004.
6. May 2006 moved to 411th Engineer Brigade where I deployed to Iraq for the Surge. This was a 15 month deployment iwth 12 months in Iraq AUG 2006 - AUG 2007.
7. Moved back south in 2007 and commanded HHC/926 Engineer Battalion from 2009-2011.
8. Served as S3 (Operations Officer) and XO for the 844th Engineer Battalion in Knoxville, TN from 2012-2015.
9. 2016 took over the 334th Forward Engineer Support Team, and took them to Iraq for Operation Inherant Resolve JAN-SEP 2017.
10. Taking over a drilling Army Core of Engineers job at USACE Great Lakes later this year. Should make LTC in the summer.
11. 27 years total time, all as a reserve/national guard member. Almost four years on active duty for mobilizations, deployments and training thus far.
12. I have been to: Belieze, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Iraq, Kuwait. Love the South Pacific.

Really loved Japan. Their long history and the fact the culture is just so ****ed up you can't help be awestruck. Philippines were amazing. Korea was fun, Manilla blew it away.

Not sure what year you where in the ROK, but in 1990 it was buck wild with very little oversight!

I did two Team Spirits. Got to the DMC both times. We landed South at Pohang and war gamed all way to the DMC. We went up against the ROK and British Royal Marines.
