It’s true. Horrible accident. Close family friend.

Apparently he was run over on I-55 while trying to help someone. He was a tremendous player, and a heckuva bulldog supporter. Always nice to me when I bumped into him. And he could talk for days.

Yeah still don’t have all of the details. Only know the general story.

For posters unfamiliar with Stan Black:

He played safety at MSU from 1973-76. He was named All-SEC twice, and an All-American in 1976. He was one of the centerpieces for two 9-win teams (1974, 76). He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 4th round (100 overall).

He owned a construction company in Gluckstadt (north of Madison). The name of it was Bulldog Construction.

RIP.

It sounds like it may not have helped in this instance, but you really should consider keeping a HiVis jacket in your car in case you have to exit your vehicle on a busy road.

Sad....got to talk to him years ago at a tailgate and just seemed like a generally nice all around guy. He was one of the players that Bob Tyler used to turn the fortunes of MSU football around. For years Ole Miss dominated us like a red headed step child.....and so did everyone else. In the 4 years I attended MSU 74-78, we beat Ole Miss 3 out of 4 times. You can mark the tenure of Bob Tyler as when MSU became competitive with Ole Miss.....and has ever since.

He was larger than life when I was a kid and the reason I am a Bulldog fan. I was never close to him but I knew his mother well, my aunt, through my mom's stories of them growing up together. She was one of the good ones in our world. If Stan was reared by her, I can't imagine him being anything other than a good guy. Him stopping to help someone, yep sounds about right.

Interviewed Stan several times while writing for the Reflector back during his playing days. Both a great guy and player. RIP.

Played at Heritage. He would knock the snot out of players. I played some softball with Stan back in the day. he had a cannon for an arm. A good guy. What a sad way to die.

I knew him well and you wouldn't meet a nicer guy than Stan. Horrible news.

He was a tough as nails player on some teams that would knock someone’s manly parts in the dirt......

I drove past the Canton exit at around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. I think I was just minutes ahead of the accident.

Don't know the details....but never get out of your car on a shoulder unless you keep your eyes fixed on the coming traffic. I see people fall asleep or are drunk run off on the shoulders all the time. It is damn scary if everyone knew what condition drivers were in driving these several thousand pounds of sizzling steel on wheels. I hate to even pull off on the shoulder....always try to make it to an exit, but sometimes you can't.
