Well, a lot of it is the distance between where the sound originates and when the students hear the sound. A split second is a long time when you are trying to get 60K to do a cheer all together.

No, the students definitely rush it. They rushed it when I was there, they rushed it when I worked on the field. We even joked about it at band camp my first year. It's bad.

Nah. Its not a matter of being slightly off. Its a matter of tempo. The students aren't even close to the correct tempo. They are closer to double tempo than actual tempo and up to the point right before they go off on their chant they are right along with the bands speed b/c they have to be. Once they start the chant part, they just go off crazily on their own.
