For Stewart it probably would be the best option at this point. He could stay a year even and still go JUCO if he wanted to.

If he plays at all, is he not eligible until 2021? Or can he go Juco for a year and then go in 2020? If that's the case, I assume he could skip JUCO and just sit out and still be eligible for 2020 (guess that's practically never really an issue; just seems crazy he would accelerate his eligibility by playing JUCO v just not playing college ball for a year)?

It depends on your age and whether you are at a four year college or a JUCO.

For Stewart I believe he would be draft eligible again after his junior year at MSU if he comes and stays with us. Ginn on the other hand will be draft eligible after his sophomore year because he will be 21 at that time.

Even if he just spends the fall with us and then goes to a Florida JUCO for the spring he would be draft eligible after his freshman year in JUCO in 2019. So, the answer to your second question is yes.


If he spends his freshman year with MSU and then goes to a JUCO he would be draft eligible after his sophomore year in JUCO- this happened with Alex Fernandez in 1990 and a few years ago with the White Sox. Others have done this too. If Stewart went this route he would be draft eligible in 2020.


MLB does have some to me crazy rules about the draft. But most players are going to prefer to go to the SEC as opposed to JUCO because you get to play against better competition and you get an extra year in most cases to mature and increase your stock. Plus, the SEC is typically going to have a better environment for playing than a JUCO. And then your odds of making it to MLB are statistically better if you play college baseball as opposed to just JUCO baseball.
