I've got a Glock 31 that I love. it's a .357. Most people don't even know Glock makes a .357, but it's an awesome gun extremely smooth if you know how to handle a Glock. it's fun to take it to the firing range and watch everyone else pullout of their booth to see who's shooting the hand cannon. it is LOUD.

1911, pick your manufacturer...I've fired Colts, S&W's, Kimbers, Remingtons, Tauruses, and several others and loved them all. There isn't a single sidearm out there that is more American than the 1911. And you can't argue with a century old service record.

^^^ man with obvious experience ^^^ ... I had a stainless colt with a nice Wilson trigger stolen ... to date it was my all time favorite - now I just have to manage with a stainless Redhawk

Right answer.

I have a Springfield XD-9mm and a STI Spartan V 1911 .45auto. You can't beat the ability to customize and quality of a 1911.

I like them all, but my all time favorite is my Ruger Mark I with the 6" bull barrel .22... I can drive tacks with that thing.. 12 shot clips for it too... a big pop-pop is cool, but I like that, get-the-f-out-my-yard-you-s-o-b..now, in about 3.5 seconds.... :p

M&P 9 is nice too...

I've got the Mark III with the 5 1/2' bull barrel and I agree, it's a great weapon especially with a small red dot sight mounted on top!

I loathe the word WEAPON. A pistol is not a weapon. It is a firearm. Can it be a weapon? Why hell yeah.
I like my Taurus judge. I can load it to shoot snakes, while I ride trails with 7 1/2, or load 45 long colts to shoot hogs or beaver. Or I can have it in my truck with 00's or copper plates for self defense.
I don't plink.

I have an old ass Blackhawk .357 magnum that I love...only made the mistake of forgetting hearing protection once with that bad boy.

been thinking about betting my wife a pistol. not sure what to get. I want something that's relatively light and easy to handle that won't scare the shit out of her, but also something that could fire center mass and get the job done should she need it when I'm out of town.

recs?

Treats me alright. Fun to plink mainly b/c it holds 16+1. Only problem I've had is a couple ftf's using non-brass casings.

People will be in one of two camps when they give you recommendations. Some will be the "anything less than .40 cal won't do the job" and others will be "anything works as long as a good shot is made".

I'm a hybrid of the two. You don't have to have a hand-cannon for it to be a good self-defense gun. But at the same time, a .22lr pistol would feel like a bit heavier pellet gun if the intruder or perp is cracked out of their mind and feels no pain.

That said, it doesn't matter the round, necessarily, as much as it is a manageable round for the shooter and proper technique and shot placement for the scenario is taught.

As far as a rec, and no offense to your wife, you probably want something for her that will hold a few rounds in the event that the first shot misses target. The Ruger LCP is always a good rec for a lighter gun, especially if it's something you want her to stick in her purse. If its something for the home while you are gone, something light in .40 cal that she can "point and shoot" is still an easy round to manage. Or a .410 or 20 gauge shotgun.

thanks J. Good advice. I've got shotguns, but they're way to long for her to handle. I'd rather get her something small to keep close to her than a smaller shotgun... but depending on price I may opt for some birdshot to the face...

Hack, get her a revolver in 357 mag, she can practice with 38's and keep it loaded with either 38+P or 357 mag loads for intruders, whatever she is comfortable shooting. Most women have trouble pulling the slide on a auto. The barrel length is a matter or personal preference. JMHO

Something else. try a Judge, but only go with a 2-1/2" cylinder and 3" barrel. Any longer on the cylinder puts it out of balance.

I'm a Glock 23 guy mainly, got the Ruger bull as well and about 6 other assorted stuff. I've wanted a 1911,for years, just never sat down and got one. Shot a Colt 1911 at the range, totally sweet.

I don't really have a favorite, but I do have 2 favorites for everyday carry. I have a Smith and Wesson M&P Shield and a Sig Sauer P250 subcompact. Both are great carry guns and very accurate.
