Modest Mouse

Sisters of Mercy

NOFX (though, their lack of commercialism is mostly self-inflicted)

The Pixies (one of the most influential bands of all time)

System of a Down

The Killers

Jack White (he's one of the greatest "rock" minds of our time; anything he's attached to is gold)

The Velvet Underground

Public Enemy (my favorite rap group)

The Misfits

Social Distortion

....

....
....
Cream (yeah, I know...one of the greatest rock bands of all time....but they are STILL not appreciated for just how influential they actually are when it comes to incorporating blues into hard rock. People tend to anoint Zeppelin with that crown, but no Jose....that belongs to Cream.

Velvet Underground. good stuff there Beard. was introduced to them back in '86 when hanging out in NYC. had 2 of their albums back in the day. On a side note, I remember walking thru The Greenwich Village one day and I walk up on a film crew and Andy Warhol. Stopped for a minute or two to watch.

Cream. I can dig your take and they are worthy. Personally, I like Clapton's post Cream stuff better. I give Zep more credit than Cream because I put more weight on how Zep added melody to metal / blues stuff. The Plant / Page combo was awesome.

Cream's Crossroads version of Robert Johnson's song is epic. What the music industry owners did to the black blues players back then was so damned criminal. I love the story of when Mick and Keith walked into an old famous recording studio in Chicago and first met Muddy Waters(one of their long time idols). It was one of their biggest WTF moments in their lives. Muddy was on a ladder painting the walls to earn extra money. That was the last time he ever picked up a paint brush. The Stones immediately embraced him and took him on tour and he opened for them. They single handedly changed his life for the better.

Check out this YouTube video / song of Robert Johnson doing Crossroads. Ever noticed the size of Johnson's hands and fingers? That shit just wasn't fair.

Great thread. When I stopped and thought about it, there are a bunch of people who didn't or don't get their due commercially, and not just obscure or indie stuff. Even among the ranks of those I consider legends are bands or artists who are essentially unknown to the general public.

Here are the ones that have popped in my head so far that no one else has mentioned yet:

Harry Nilsson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dB8fAUZE1o)

The Kinks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3D76jm2vKs&list=PLC99488D21ADC54CF) (specifically mid-1960s to mid-1970s)

The Pretty Things (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRJHo378Dro)

Steve Gunn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckSY12Dmw8Q)

The Yardbirds (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rcxPrsmYgg&list=PLa1QAQkxNd8uucgt2WpiiURnhOUyALDLx) (the Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page years more than Clapton's stint)

Curtis Mayfield (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgCZ5PQNxZQ)

Spacemen 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGTi3g72B8)

Moby Grape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdI7uqCBKd0&list=PL8a8cutYP7fojSii4F-ymNdTbmJBNylNu)

The Zombies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goDxhJl1UJE)

John McLaughlin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ofh_S52Uks)

Jonathan Wilson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ghow9gOYec&t=11m23s)

Shuggie Otis (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZkCDr6VLb8)

Townes Van Zandt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M15Oat49zTM&list=PLiN-7mukU_REx4cpDothn4VXGF8jT6I-G)

Tom Waits (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laAA5p9P0rA&list=PLp5kXZu2S1hpZDmoVFgI77qPjMfqVDFK9)

John Fahey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTtgvJuzRM0)

I could go on, especially if you want to get into jazz musicians. In fact, I'd say that entire genre has gotten the shaft from the mainstream. Albums like Kind of Blue (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32gWo9CfoxA), Thelonious Monk Trio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZcTZycaBdg&list=PLp1OjP0tJn_ECjFmCN0gE7zJtvCGJ3YeX), Minugs Ah Uhm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0A_Ik6TTn0), and A Love Supreme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll3CMgiUPuU) should be mandatory listening for any fan of American music.

Why do the radio stations blow "Simple Man" and ignore "Tuesday's Gone"? the latter is the better if you listen to the song, lyrics and ..... Tuesday's Gone would make Mozart & Beethoven jealous. let's appreciate what is GOOD.

Other songs that should get more airplay:

Stevie Wonder Signed Sealed Delivered & Superstitious

Ringo Starr Photograph & It Don't Come Easy

Bad Finger No Matter What & Baby Blue (what a tragic ending to that band, 17'd royally by the music execs, leaving them penniless resulting in 2 suicides.)

Loved bad finger. Add in Todd Rungden and Joe Walsh, pre-Eagle.

Yes to Rundgren. I'm not as familiar with his music as I should be. Went to listen a few minutes ago. I've always liked Joe Walsh solo stuff more than the Eagles.

Always wondered why "You Want See Me" off the Rubber Soul album never gets hardly any air play either now that I think about it.

As in "Velvet" Underground? Beard and I commented on them earlier in this thread.
