After my cooking tonight it is time to replace my charcoal grill. It was a cheap Walmart grill that I got a solid 3 years out of. Most of the time it was in the weather due to lack of covered patio area. What are yalls recommendations? I?m not really wanting a ceramic one due to just not wanting to spend that much money.

I recently jumped on the Weber Kettle train and I don't think I'll look back. 22 inch classic is $99, 22 premium in $149, and the 22 master touch is $199. I'd go at least the premium so you get the ash catcher pot and the grill grate with the hinged ends. I have the master touch and all that is, is a premium with a removable circle in the middle of the grate that you can buy accessories for like a sear grate, pizza stone, wok, etc... You also get a second tier rack and the coal tray for indirect smoking. You can always upgrade to the master touch grate at a later date. So far I've done ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, steaks, chicken wing, you name it. I love it.

Prediction? Pain.

What he said. I bought my 22" Weber kettle in 2010 and it's still rocking along fine. I have the cheapo basic model, though I added a hinged grate years ago. I've used it for grilling and smoking just about everything. Mine is also on an exposed patio, but I've had great results with using a simple grill cover. (The cover is Weber branded. Tried a generic one from Walmart once, but it didn't last.) Only thing I wish mine had was a built in stand or foldable sideboards or wings. My ceramic grill has those and I've found them very useful.

If you go this route and would like to use the kettle as a smoker too, look into this:

Here's a review of the thing from a fantastic site about grilling and smoking:

It's simple and works incredibly well. I smoke on a ceramic grill most of the time now, but I still think the best briskets I've ever made came off my Smokenator-rigged Weber kettle.

Reading the current AmazingRibs review, I see they now favor a new similar device called a "Slow 'n Sear." By the looks of it, that would probably be an even better bet. In fact, I'll stop talking now and refer you to the experts. Just take a look at this to see just how awesome and versatile Weber kettles can be:

I need two new grills. One for home and one for the cabin. I am looking into the combo unit that is gas and charcoal. Kind figuring that I would have the best of both worlds.

Had one of those from Sam's with the smoke box and sear station and I found the smoke box was shitty (not properly sealed) and I ended up barely using the sear station. By the end I was exclusively using the charcoal side so I made the move to a weber. If I'm going to do quick and easy, I use the cast iron skillet inside in place of when I used to use gas. If I went that route for the camp, I wouldn't get the huge one with all the extras like my last one. I'd get the basic gas on one side and charcoal on the other. Just my 2 cents.

Noted Beast! I think I'm going with the basic. Keeping it simple.

Big Big fan of the Weber Kettle. They are all I've grilled on for the last 20 years, and my Dad has been grilling on them for 50. I leave mine out, in coastal salt air, with no cover and get a solid 8-10 years of life. I replace the grate every 2-3 years.
