I heard this on XM back in December and thought it sounded pretty good. It kept the emphasis on rivalry games, the importance of conf champs, on campus games a part of the playoffs (Love this) and seemed to make things work for 8 team playoff.

His plan:
Here are the features that he proposed for an 8 team playoff.

First game for all teams would be 3d week in August. This would be the time to play your cupcake or at least one of them.

Every team would have a bye following this game. First week of September would be the next game and all teams would play 11 games over the next 12 weeks. Conferences can determine whether their teams play 8 or 9 conference games. Teams avoid playing major nonconference opponents at their own peril.

All teams would finish the regular season after their annual rivalry game. All teams playing in Conference Championship games would then get a bye. During the bye week, Army and Navy would have the sole FBS game that day. The following week the conference championship games would be held, giving them a bye week to recover from their season ending rivalry game. In other words, flip flop the Army-Navy game and the Conference Championship games. The 5 Power 5 Conference Champs would advance.

There would be no need for a committee except for the following. The committee would then select the best Group of 5 team; they would also select the top two additional wild card teams, bringing the total to 8 teams. The committee would then seed the Top 4 teams who would host round 1. Round 1 would take place the following week at the home stadium of the top 4. Then there would be a break over Christmas.

The 4 winners would be paired up by the committee at the rotation Big 6 bowl games exactly like they are today. Then the winners meet in the dedicated national championship game the week after.
