I had a birthday the other day and I had a party. One of friends is an Ole Miss fan and she was bragging about the Egg Bowl win. I told her to have fun while on probation. She looked at me and said "What are you talking about?" And she was being serious. And while yes, this was a girl and a lot of them don't keep up with football and while others do- for context this girl has a family that has a weekend house within walking distance of Vaught Hemingway. She goes to all of the home football games. So, she's slightly more than a casual fan. I would imagine that female MSU football fans with her level of fandom would know if we were under NCAA investigation. She didn't. And it absolutely blew my mind. They just bury and spin the truth and totally dismiss what they don't want to hear or like. I told her very briefly about the Ole Miss sanctions and she was shocked. She's lucky- I gave her a heads up. I suspect most of their fans won't be.
If the roles were reversed, MSU would have handled this totally differently. I am confident there would have only been one NOA because we would not have defiantly fought the NCAA tooth and nail the whole way. We would have fired our head coach immediately- like we pretty much did with Jackie. Had Freeze not gotten caught with an escort, there is no question in my mind he would still be their coach- until tomorrow at least. MSU and our fan site reporters would have been honest and I think if the roles were reversed, we would have been absolutely pissed off. That's probably a good thing to be pissed off about too. It would be embarrassing for MSU and everyone that represents it. I'm glad I'm on the MSU side of this no matter how light or harsh the sanctions are.
My attitude towards the sanctions is to pretty much keep the bar low. Expect the penalties to be on the low end. If you're expecting the death penalty- you're not going to be happy even if the sanctions are actually crippling in reality. I don't know what the penalties will be and I have no idea what the NCAA will do. I don't think anyone really and truly does either- at least not until around lunch time.
Whatever happens- Ole Miss is going to be in a disadvantaged situation. Probation is not a good thing. They can spin it as "overcoming adversity"- which is ridiculous and would piss me off if I was the NCAA to be honest with you. That would be like me robbing a bank and getting a light sentence and some lucky breaks along the way and calling it "overcoming adversity". What we have to do is take advantage of what they are going through. As much as it is fun to bag on Don right now- he did leave us in pretty good shape. We'll know more in a week but it looks like Moorhead is doing the right things (or is at least saying them) at this point to help us take things to the next level. A coach that wants to be here and make a name for himself is going to re-energize MSU. He's already added a running back coach that is considered one of the best in the country and Looney will stay on and is an excellent recruiter as well. It appears as if the recruiting front office- Peterson, Austin, Gibson, Bowen and etc. will stay intact and there's talk of bringing Tony Hughes back in some capacity. So, recruiting looks pretty good right now. If Mo adds in a great DC it's game on. The biggest thing we need to do is keep having major success and winning at least 8 games a year and we need to win the Egg Bowl the next few years. That's what is going to put Ole Miss away for awhile. That's what we didn't do in the mid 90's. We don't go 3-8 and lose to Ole Miss and Northeast Louisiana in 1995- who knows? Maybe Deuce McAllister goes to MSU. That happens then Ole Miss is a lot worse in the late 1990's and then Eli came along. There was definately a degree of luck involved with Ole Miss at that time as well too.
And speaking of Deuce- I don't expect Ole Miss to stop cheating and neither should you. It's engrained in their DNA and I think they actually enjoy it. It's not enough to join the booster club- they want to hang out with the team. They have a major culture problem that I think it too far gone. I don't even think the death penalty would fix it. Slow it down- yes. Stop it? No. Their Network might get them a Sugar Bowl once every 10 years if things go their way- but then they are going to be flaming pile of crap the rest of the time. They are not willing to even try to build a program the right way- even though their way probably results in more long term damage than a bad coach.
So, my friends IT is not only coming....IT is here.
And IT is not us. Hail State!
