So he knows how to make a great first impression. Here's the story of his first meeting with the Fordham team which I'm sure has been embellished a bit in the years since.

The backdrop is that he just took over a talented roster full of undisciplined kids who went 1 - 10 the year before leading to the coaching vacancy. They stroll into the gym, hats on backwards, earrings in, with attitudes wondering who the new guy is. In walks Joe. He looks up at the team lazily sprawled out on the bleachers and says "I'm going to turn around when I turn back, it's hats off, earrings out and you will be at attention when I address you." When he turned back the room was dead quiet and every kid was sitting up as straight as an arrow. From that moment until the day he left they hung on his every word. His greatest gift is that he will get every kid to play better than they thought they had in them.
