View Full Version : Did Mullen really do anything Sherrill didn't do?

Mullen was 69-46 overall (60%) and 33-39 SEC (46%)

King Jackie was 59-46-2 overall (55%) and 36-34-1 SEC (51%) through 9 seasons.

Biggest differences: We play 12 game schedules now that add one more gimme win, usually vs. an FCS opponent. Yes, Jackie lost some games he shouldn't but the SEC % tells the tale.

While Jackie wasn't an offensive guru, he DID have a plan for offense (mainly huge OL and RBs), and mobile QBs.

Also, Jackie also loaded up on JUCOs in about year 8 or 9, just like Mullen did last year.

Why again are we thinking we can't replace this guy? Matter of fact, it's probably a good time to move on, perhaps we can skip the disaster that happens when the JUCOs fall apart on you.

He left us with a loaded roster and a brighter future. We won?t be hiring Croom this time around.

Exactly, another reason to be happy about it.

But as to my post, my point is that Mullen really isn't the best we could do. He was simply a 'competent' coach, much like King Jackie. Jackie was actually better. At least we did get a tangible trophy from his tenure (SEC West title).

Had Jackie left after 1999 (his 9th year), that new coach would have inherited a loaded roster as well. But, one that loses a ton of pieces.

8 straight bowl games can't be overstated at State

There?s way more bowl games now and we play an extra non-conference game every year.

I also remember being left out one of Jackie?s years when we were 7-4.
That would never happen in today?s game

Dan didn't leave us on probation with lost schollies. Program is in great place right now.

I've posted this before too and almost reposted it post-Egg Bowl. If Dan had an 11 game season and with fewer bowls like Jackie, he wouldn't have gone to 8 straight bowls either. 1 less guaranteed win/year.

ETA: Jackie did leave us in worse shape tho when he finally left.

If it?s so easy to get to bowl games why are we only one of 5 sec teams to do it the last 8 years. It?s not easy.

Actually it can. That was great for sheepish momentum and all, but it was a smokescreen.

In 2011 and 2013, we would be a 5-6 team back in Jackie's day in the mid-90s. That 12th game helped us because it was an auto-W. Not to mention Jackie got screwed out of a bowl in 1997 at 7-4 (equivalent to modern day 8-4).

Jackie would have too had he left after 1999, his 9th year. Why is this so hard to understand.

They brought different things to the table.

Dan won consistently and rarely lost games he shouldn't but rarely beat or upset better teams. Jackie occasionally beat or upset better teams but he also occasionally lost to teams that he shouldn't.

Hopefully we can find a combination of the good and consistent Dan and the occasional upset ability that Jackie had.

The question you asked was did dan do anything Jackie didn't do. The answer is yes. Dan left us in a much better situation than Jackie.

The SEC West during Jackie's years were not nearly as hard as Mullen's. Especially the first 5 years. During his 9 years you have had 3 different teams win or play for the national title how many times? 7 or 8 if you included Bama vs LSU title game.

We also didn't have near the money or facilities back then. You can go on and on with this. History is a pretty good comparison too. Had we had a BCS and playoff more SEC teams probably would have won in them days.

Not even close even with the BCS or playoff in the SEC west during that time. There were not nearly that many national contenders during Jackie time from the SEC West.

Mullen is also partially responsible for the additional money and facilities upgrades.
