W Florida lost 3 starters last season and missing their leading returning scorer from last season... 7-2 West Florida 3 mins deep.

I?m not impressed

Howland has turned good shooters into shit. I really am speechless at the effort and concentration our team has at this moment. What is up with Q? He’s missing point blank shots, wide open shots, really all shots. Peters looks like shit right now as well. What did Howland do to these guys?

Herard does pull us down though and is a big reason West Florida had success driving to the goal. That won’t be there for teams when Ado is in the middle.

When our bigs step out on D, we struggle switching out front and getting back in the paint. Not a fan of our D at all

How is he so bad at D? He doesn't look like he should be as slow as he is?

Not sure why herard gets blamed for our guards not being able to guard their man in man-to-man

That was not a moving screen on Holman. If that’s what they call this year, 80% of all teams will foul out.

I?m hoping Howland told the officials to call moving screen on anything close... make us play crisp

Wide open shots and he can make that. I’m okay with that shot.

That starting five can be blamed for the slow start though. I’d start Datcher or Holman at the five until Ado gets back.

Very deep and no ball movement. If he takes it from there, I want it on a kick out pass stepping in, not falling away off the dribble

Finished much better than we started this half. Hopefully we pour it on big time in the 2nd half to get a little momentum headed into the season

Read here that Peters had such a great summer that he will be a NBA lottery pick. Since then I've read he's not in shape and playing terrible tonight? What's the real story?

MCsMGs
11-02-2017, 08:03 PM
I don't get the slow starts...forces Howland into making early substitutions. He is still experimenting with different combos and will have to tighten up the rotation. Wright needs more minutes. Our transition offense is deadly...we just don't set very good screens in our sets and it screws up the timing of those plays.

Oh I agree. The talent is there though. Howland has to get the right guys on the floor though. And we need to hit the wide open perimeter shots when we get them.

I really can’t tell you. He was bad ass at the Adidas Nations Tournament in August but he was on Maten’s team who has great hands and can set screens. Without Ado, our bigs are sucking at setting screens and Herard led to two Peters turnovers in the first half.

I don’t know about poorly coached but our starting fives left a lot to be desired. Our screen setting by our bigs is atrocious. We were only able to set 5/18 screens against Nebraska which is putrid. Losing Ado like we did was terrible as I think we easily beat Nebraska with him. Our biggest weakness defensively is teams driving to the basket and with Ado that just won’t happen. Teams won’t be able to do it period.

MarketingBully
11-02-2017, 08:24 PM
I understand being conservative with Ado but if he can play in the opener please play him.

Agree. Wright seems clearly better than Carter.

So I’d start Nick W at PG and Holman at the five if Ado can’t go and start Wright for Carter so starting five for the opener would be:

PG - Nick W
SG - Q
SF - Wright
PF - Stapleton
C - Holman

That five should get a good start against Alabama State.

HoopsDawg
11-02-2017, 08:32 PM
My starting 5 would be: Nick, Peters, Q, X, and Ado. Wright and Holman would play a lot. Those are my Top 7. Then Datcher and Carter would get spot duty.

Feazell would redshirt and Herard wouldn't play much.

Nick has played outstanding and he has had 2 three's taken away due to illegal screens.

Irondawg
11-02-2017, 08:34 PM
To me we just don’t do good things well coached teams do. We are really poor fundamentally on defense and often flat footed and show very little intensity. We don’t block out and rebound with authority. Our shot selection is really poor a lot of the time and we don’t move with purpose on offense. We dribble and cut without really trying to do anything so our spacing is often poor and we just pass to guys that are in spots where they can’t really do anything.

Basically to me we don’t look much different than last year. We might squeak into the NIT but after watching them a few times I give us zero shot at the NCAA

Yep, and we finally have a five (Holman) who is catching Peters’/Nick W’s drop-offs. Early in the game those were going through Herard’s hands.

Instead of calling guys out, be glad you missed the first 12 mins or so. If we play like we did to start this game vs anyone with a pulse on our schedule, we would lose. This team deserved to be called out

The competition is making us look better and we are hitting some outside shots now. Like last year if we hit well from outside we will ha g around most games but I still see a very flawed team. We will see though

They had Peters and Nick W playing together tonight and quite honestly those two at the 1 and 2 putting ball pressure up top with Ado/Holman on the backend will make our defense much much better. I think we are really struggling a lot right now giving Herard too many minutes in the post. He’s going to be really good for us but will more then likely come on his junior and senior year. He is doing too much thinking atm. Eventually we should start Nick W/Peters together with Q, Stapleton and Ado as our starting five. This team has a lot of great potential. We just have to find a temporary starting five that gives us a boost until Ado comes back. The way we finished the game still has me very optimistic regarding the season.

So I?d start Nick W at PG and Holman at the five if Ado can?t go and start Wright for Carter so starting five for the opener would be:

PG - Nick W
SG - Q
SF - Wright
PF - Stapleton
C - Holman

That five should get a good start against Alabama State.

Wait so you don't want our lottery pick Lamar Peters starting?? Knew that lottery talk hype was bullshit. (not saying you were hyping him, the Vegas writers were). Peters gonna be here a minimum this year and next and I am not bitching about that. He ain't no lottery pick though.

Yeah...like that possession early in the game when he had a layup as open as he does during warm ups and he makes a pass that get fumbled and we lose the ball. Ya gotta admire unselfishness, but that was stupid! He's gonna have to get much more consistent if we are gonna compete with good teams. Howland chewed his butt for not taking that lay up.

Basically one thing I still want to know - who is the on-court leader of this team? Which player is gonna get in a guy's ear if he's not hustling, etc?

I haven't seen it yet - but if we want to be good, someone has to be that guy
