1. Money. MSU now pays with the big boys. We have a top 15 salary. Can go higher if needed.

2. Assistant pay. Mullen needs a big time defensive coordinator. We paid about $350k and that doesn't work. So we topped $500k with Diaz. Now we are at $1 million with Grantham. So that problem has been fixed. We will get Mullen what he needs.

3. Facilities. Stadium upgrades, football facility, etc. are first class. And Mullen had a hand in the decisions.

4. Employers. Never underestimate the importance of liking your boss. Mullen really likes and respects Cohen and Keenum. They have his back and he knows it.

5. Players. We could be 9-3 this year with an incredibly small senior class. And we add immediate impact players next year in Guidry, Rivers, and Cole. And Georgia rotates off the schedule. We might have the fewest senior contributors in the conference.

6. Recruiting. The 2018 class looks good. We are sweeping the in-state talent. 2019 looks to be even better.

7. Competition. Ole Miss and their probation opens the door for us to dominate in-state talent.

8. Pressure. We want to win badly. But we don't burn your house down when you lose. We are one of the most sane fan bases in sports.

9. Meddling. We don't have boosters that interfere badly. Or ex-coaches, or trustees. That's a real problem at most schools.

10. Quarterbacks. Mullen missed on many quarterbacks early. Like Newton, Rivers, and many more. He was left with guys like Favre. But now he is hand picking them. Dak has provided tremendous exposure. We get Key, with good commits for 2018 and 2019.

11. Pride. Mullen has a chance to be the greatest we ever had. The coach we build a statue of.

The Ole Miss mess has opened the door. I could have seen him jumping jobs if Freeze and the Network had been allowed to operate without any consequences. But now, he knows he can take the next step, at least over the next 2-3 years.

I really hope he sees this. We are in such a great situation, and I'd really like him to be the guy at the forefront of it. However, I understand this is the real world and it isn't all peaches and sunshine. When somebody dangles a ton of money in front of you, it talks.

I think a lot of momentum is lost if he jumps after this season. He needs to wait one more, so we can finish this recruiting class.

Only he knows what he really wants. He may not care about any of the above.

We pay big money. And can pay more.

Very good post. Only thing add is that we probably do have some boosters who would like to interfere, but so far it seems to have been squelched which is important

Another reason....why would someone with little pressure go to a school that has fired 2 coaches in three years?..and let's say it does not work out and he is fired in four years .......it will take years to build back up to the 4.5 million he is earring now ...(see Lane Kiffin at 850k )

A story appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer back when State was at the top of the polls about Dan's connections in Pennsylvania. They also talked to Dan's father who is a big-time Penn State fan, I have no doubts that Dan grew up listening to stories about how Joe Paterno took Penn State from the outhouse to the penthouse and how he did it. I also think he was determined that if he ever had a chance he wanted to build a program like Penn State did. That's why he isn't going anywhere else... he can make a program just like Swinney has done with Clemson, Beamer did with Virginia Tech, Bill Snyder did with Kansas State, and Bowden did with Florida State. Heck, even Bama wasn't much of a program until the Bear built it into a powerhouse. Where else would Dan get a chance like this today? And in the SEC no less?

Also. let's not forget that he is a people person too... loves talking to fans and explains the game so well, just like Jackie did...

I'm not so sure. We tend to historically have the opposite problem from the rest of the league- we hold on to coaches too long if they are not performing for fear that we will screw up the next hire. The bad thing about that is it sometimes throws us into a long rebuilding process. The good thing is we can show coaches that one bad season or loss isn't going to get them fired. Every coach MSU has had since the mid 1950's has been at MSU at least five seasons. That includes Charley Shira who didn't win a SEC game for his first few years and Wade Walker who honestly might be the worst coach we ever had. What did we do with Walker? Promote him to AD. And Shira has a building named after him on campus.

John Cohen a former coach who has coached in a national championship is your AD. He understands what it takes and what you have to have to win and will give you those resources. See the million to hire Grantham.

If you read the Bill Belichik book, the "The Making of a Coach", a coach should never leave a great fit situation with a good boss. There is a long and logical narrative to favor stability over a slightly better economic deal

Bottom line: at the next job you could be well off and thrive, but if there is a faction that is not vested in you or has an loyalty to a jilted 2nd choice...they will work to destroy you.

So the field is littered with former young geniuses. Even belichik nearly ended his career in Cleveland.

You posting this hoping Mullen is reading the board? Otherwise you're just preaching to the choir.

Plus, these employers are not going anywhere else. This means he has stability here that he cannot count on at other schools.
