Why is it that sports media in MS feel the need to constantly belittle the teams in this state? What?s the gain for them? Are they seeking national cred? From Bo arguing hypotheticals with people about who he ?thinks? Mullen would leave us for to Jake being overly pessimistic on everything to Weiner talking for 20 minutes yesterday about he believes there?s no doubt MSU basketball is in trouble over the FBI probe saying ?why would any player want to go there and out of the blue they start getting players?. Hell it might be true but at the his point there is no evidence for any of these accusations whether it?s what job Mullen would take to trouble with basketball.

I?ve lived in 4 states and the local media there never talked about their programs like these guys do. If it warranted, like OM NCAA stuff, Redmond, etc that?s fine and fair game.

Agree. It's perplexing.

I've never figured this out either.

Not sure how a state that's already low on self esteem is supposed to ever overcome that when it's state motto is "pump your brakes"

Did they harp on Freeze getting a top 3 class with no success in college football? At least Howland can actually point to the fact that he has been a top 10 level coach in the country and he develops NBA MVP and Allstars.

Jake Wimberly pissed me off last week when he said there was "no way" MSU would EVER have a top 10 football recruiting class...

AND...

If we did some how get a top 10 recruiting class we'd be "in trouble" just like "that other school 90 miles away."

Not once did he take into account any scenario where om could be on life support from the NCAA along with other SEC teams not named Alabama taking a drop in recruiting b/c of coaching changes. He just said it was impossible for us to ever bring in a top 10 recruiting class.

Here's what is weird to me. We're poised to have a lot of success in football over the next few years and yet we have MSU people trying to get as many people as possible to pump the brakes all of a sudden. Talk about fear of failure.

Because to a lot of people just going 6-6 to 8-4 every year is a lot easier to feel good about because to them that's better than going for 8-4 to 10-2 because we might not get there ever so they don't want to be frustrated because they went for a higher goal and failed. Of course by not going for the higher goal they don't achieve it either and our full potential is never reached.

My only guess, it is the known formula among sports media to generate clicks and maximize sponsors. You talk trash about OM, you lose money. You talk trash about State and it upsets the State fans and gets them listening and the OM people continue to buy air time.

That is the only logical explanation I have.

There is not one single thing that has come out so far to link us to this, except the fact that we wear Addias. Never mind that none of the arrests so far were at Addias schools. Nike is up to their eyeballs in this too, but somehow that never seems to get mentioned. Just another example of the media ignoring UM’s obvious troubles for years but going out of their way to link us to anything they can, even when there is no link.

Well he better get ready because we have zero in state competition next year and it's the best crop of in state kids this state has had since 09. If we land them all and get any out of state blue chip guys it will be around 10.

He states emphatically that the only reason Howland was hired was because he was "an Adidas guy". Which he implies - no strike that - which he again emphatically states was because Howland plays the shoe company game.

And for those that don't know, John Weiner is a radio guy who used to have his own show(s) but now is a guest or guest host on all the other ESPN radio shows locally. He also, along with Jake Wimberly, are self-professed MSU fans.

I wouldn't call Wimberley and Weiner Ms Media. Hell, they have maybe 75-100 listeners a day, if that.

And here is how it works... they buy the time from espn and then try to sell ads to cover the cost. Lucky if they even break even.

Wimberly still thinks Acy has it on the ball. They are best buddies who like to hear their selves talk.

Wiener was back on it today on OOB that there's no reason for recruits to go to Starkville and that he's certain we're cheating our asses off. And then you have Jackson agreeing with him. However, I don't think I've ever heard Jackson have an opinion, he just mumbles about something, then the host says something different, and then jackson's like *mumble mumble* you're right *mumble*

His response was basically "I didn't say MSU was in trouble or that good recruits won't go there, I just said MSU is in trouble and good recruits won't go there".

I don't understand why this mantra is repeated. You can't tell me recruits go to Kansas because they have a great school or location. Howland has proven he can take teams to the Final Four. He has also proven he can develop players and get them to the NBA. Westbrook wasn't a 5 star can't miss prospect and now he is the NBA MVP. Howland had something to do with developing a 3 star recruit into one of the best all around players in the NBA in the last decade.

Does he say that when MSU baseball gets a good recruit? For over a decade, MSU basketball had one of the top 4 teams in the SEC so it isn't like we have never had success.

He said that no players that are being recruited now have even heard of any of the great former players that went to MSU. So that means nothing to them. And of course he added that all of the good players Stansbury landed were because he was cheating too.

Message board effect.

1. Say something overly critical of your own team.
2. When called on it, say ?I?m being a realist?

In a court of law it?s called a statement against interests. It appears to have more credibility. Notice I said appears.

It?s why Neal McCready is constantly trying to run from the term ?fanboy?. He wants so badly to be taken seriously by national media.

Unless being a fanbase journalist is what you want for a career, it?s a death knell for those who don?t. Thus, they try to appear to be credible with clickbait statements they know aren?t true.
