I encourage everyone to actually step back and think about how much has changed since this time last year. The past year tells an eventful, toxic rivalry-filled story. Although it feels like years ago, it was actually this week last year when we were discussing rumors of former Ole Miss recruits being granted immunity by the NCAA Enforcement staff. Here is a post of mine from 8/24/16 regarding the rumors...

"Enjoy this season, because it is Freeze's last and also the last year that Ole Miss will be relevant for a while. Just wait, when you lose to FSU and Bama, everyone will start turning on each other. The season will implode and a mass exodus will be seen at Ole Miss from both fans and players when they realize that IT'S OVER."

To better reflect on the past year, you first must understand what lead up to it, and why this would be such a pivotal year in the State of Mississippi.

-Mullen is hired in 2009. He goes on to beat OM in each of his first 3 years as Head Coach at MSU(2009, 2010, 2011), while rubbing the domination in publicly and loudly.

-Following the 2011 season, OM fires Nutt and hires Hugh Freeze. OM could not stand that MSU was doing it the right way and still better than OM, so they decide to go #ALLIN like never before.

-Freeze beats Mullen in his first year to break a 3 game MSU Egg Bowl winning streak to become bowl eligible with 6 wins. This occasion was celebrated by the OM faithful by storming the field and tearing down the goal posts (but MSU are the obsessed ones, right?)

-Both state and OM win their 2012 bowl games. A month later, OM and Freeze go on to sign the #1 OT, #1 WR, and #1 DT in the country, to go along with many other blue chippers. This class was a consensus top 5 class nationally and coming after a 6-6 regular season with a first year head coach.

-The 2013 season was a wild one in the state of Mississippi. Going into the last 2 weeks of the regular season, OM was 7-3, riding the momentum of the 2013 class to what looked like a big year for Freeze in year 2. At this time, MSU was 4-6 and one loss away from breaking Mullen's 4 year bowl streak and completely losing any bit of momentum within the state. The week before the Egg Bowl, MSU beat Arkansas in OT and OM lost to Mizzou, bring MSU's record to 5-6 and OM's to 7-4. Like the year before, but opposite, Mullen would have to win the Egg Bowl to become bowl eligible. Dak comes in in the 4th quarter, beginning his legacy at MSU by going on to beat OM in OT and becoming bowl eligible for the 5th straight season. Dak has a huge game against Rice in the Liberty Bowl, and OM beats GT.

-Going into the 2014 season, both State and OM were riding their own momentum, and both believed that they each had a chance to win the West. State rises to #1 while Ole Miss is not far behind at #3. State and OM share the cover of Sports Illustrated and Mississippi is the center of the college football universe. OM goes on the lose 3 tough games, while State lost at Bama. Going into the 2014 Egg Bowl, State is 10-1 and OM is 8-3. This is arguably the biggest Egg Bowl in it's history, as State is #4 and fighting for a spot in the inaugural playoff, and OM is a win away from a New Years 6 bowl game appearance. OM beats State, declining MSU a spot in the Playoff. Both teams play and lose in New Years 6 bowl games. (this Egg Bowl will be vacated, as will all of OM's wins in the 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 seasons, along with games between October 25, 2014 and December 31, 2014).

-In the months leading up the 2015 season, OM star Laramy Tunsil has an altercation with his Step-Father, agents are involved. Freeze comes out in support of Tunsil, stating that he was just protecting his mother. Tunsil does not start game 1, and it becomes evident that Tunsil's step father is talking and the NCAA is listening. State has a decent season in Dak's last year, while Ole Miss is a 4th and 25 away from winning the West for the first time in their history. OM embarrasses Mullen and State at home in the 2015 egg bowl, and it seems obvious to on lookers that OM may be passing MSU for the first time since Mullen has been at State. OM wins the 2016 Sugar Bowl and seem to have taken the next step as a program. However, less than a month after the Sugar Bowl OM is issued a notice of allegations with double digit Football violations. OM lies and says that it is all WBB, Track and Field, and Houston Nutt's staff. This orchestrated lie comes a week before OM signs another top 5 recruiting class that included a Starkville High School 4 star in AJ Brown.

-In April 2016, the Draft Night fiasco goes down, and the NCAA sends OM a second notice of inquiry, and begins investigating issues that eventually become the allegations in the 2017 NOA addendum.

-This leads to months of OM lying and deflecting. Eventually, the 2016 football season arrives and the OM hype is real as they are ranked #11 in the preseason polls, and have a big time match up with another top 10 team Florida State in week 1.

Now, lets look at the past year. The 2016 season was set up perfectly to be a pivotal one in the State of Mississippi.

-The rivalry is as toxic as ever between State and OM, with both teams experiencing real success over the past 4 years, without one fully separating itself from the other.

-OM privately sees this as the all or nothing season, as they know that this is most likely the last full season unaffected by NCAA sanctions. MSU is coming off the Dak era, and have no identity on offense, and a first year Defensive Coordinator running the defense.

-Prior the 2016 season, State and OM had the exact same overall and SEC records since Freeze was hired in 2012:

Freeze and OM: (34-18 overall); (17-15 SEC)
Mullen and MSU: (34-18 overall); (17-15 SEC)

-State gets upset by South Alabama in week 1, and by the time State fans have finally accepted the USA loss, they turn on the TV to see that OM is beating Florida State 28-6 late in the 1st half. It seems as if OM will distance itself from State and take a step alone towards national relevancy. FSU then goes on to score 33 unanswered and OM loses, once again failing to take a step past MSU.

-In week 3, OM has a chance to beat Bama for the 3rd year in a row while MSU's season is setting up to be a 4-5 win season. State fans turn on the TV to see that OM is beating Bama 24-3 late in the 1st half, and once again seem to be taking a step past MSU. Bama goes on to score 24 unanswered and eventually win the game.

-Fast forward to November 1st. Both OM(after being ranked #11 preseason) and MSU are 3-5. Mullen and Freeze records since Freeze's hiring are still identical going into Freeze's final 4 games. OM goes 2-1 over the next 3 games while MSU goes 1-2. If State beats OM, both Freeze and Mullen will have identical records both overall and in the SEC over Freeze's tenure. State goes on to demolish OM in the Egg Bowl, this coming days after OM assistant coach Barney Farrar is placed on Administrative Leave for involvement in potential NCAA violations.

-Following the Egg Bowl, both Freeze and Mullen have a 39-25 record overall and a 17-15 record in the SEC. Both teams are 5-7, but only State gets rewarded with a bowl game because of player's grades. State wins the bowl game and Mullen goes to 40-25 since 2012, while Freeze's record is finalized at 39-25. What a big game that 2016 Egg Bowl was. Mullen beat Freeze in his last game, to even both their records, and give Mullen a chance to one up him by one game in his 7th straight bowl game appearance.

-State has a great 2017 recruiting class while OM's suffers due to impending NCAA doom. A month after signing day, OM is issued an addendum to the original NOA, bring the Level I violation tally up to 15, including a head coach responsibility allegation, and a Lack of Institutional Control allegation.

-OM continues to lie over the following months, pointing fingers at Leo Lewis and claiming that the violation involving him will be thrown out.

-In July 2017, Freeze resigns due to hookers, and OM has completely fallen apart. The NCAA issues a reply to OM's response, confirming that all allegations are credible through the Enforcement staff's eyes, including the ones involving Leo Lewis.

-OM will be tried in front of the COI on September 11, 2017.

In just one year, everything has changed. OM is done, and we are riding the momentum. We will look back at last year for decades to come as the beginning of the best stretch in MSU football, and the worst stretch in OM football.

OM had so many chances to use their hired guns to pass Mullen and MSU, but in the end, State and Mullen were 1 game better.

Nice post. My only nitpick is that we lost our bowl game to Northwestern following the 2012 season, but this is a great retrospective on how far OM has fallen in one year. I don't believe they are anywhere NEAR the bottom yet, either.

DD34 - You sir, are a fine American!

That should be taught schools throughout the State.

That is a nice synopsis, of how it got to where it is, today.

The next period will be defined by:
1) The Onfield products of both teams.
2) The 9/11-12 COI hearing, and the spin the UM media community attempts to put on it until...
3) Sanctions get handed down, later this year. When the hammer gets used, and it is used as anticipated, "IT" will have truly arrived.
