Defining Reckless Driving in Mississippi

Per the amended version of the Mississippi state code, 63-3-1201, a driver commits the offense of reckless driving when he operates a motor vehicle in a way that shows wanton or willing lack of regard for the well-being of other individuals or property--either public or private.
Reckless Driving Penalties in Mississippi
Reckless driving

Misdemeanor

Fines not to exceed $100 for first offense; second offense carries incarceration of not more than 10 days with fines not to exceed $500

License suspension unlikely first offense, second offense possible suspension by MSDPS
Impact on Your Drivers License

The impact on a driver’s license for reckless driving mainly stems from the potential of suspension should a driver reoffend. However, if the reckless driving charge is in conjunction with other criminal offenses, the impact on a license will increase dramatically, pending the nature of the other offenses.
Options for Dealing with a Reckless Driving Charge in Mississippi

Addressing a reckless driving charge will require the intervention of legal counsel during criminal proceedings. Although reckless driving first offense penalties in Mississippi are some of the lowest in the country, conviction still does create a criminal record. It places the driver in jeopardy for reoffending and being hit with higher penalties. For the most part, the options for addressing the criminal case will include seeking outright dismissal of the reckless driving charge, which often culminates in a plea deal involving pleading guilty to a non-criminal traffic violation, payment of those fines, and no interference on a driver’s license.

I will take wreck-less driving over shoplifting "cleaning supplies" any day... one is a felony... one is not... Where the cleaning supplies going to be used for cleaning or something else?

Looks like he must've been going 20+ MPH over the speed limit.

It's obviously a dumb mistake that I'm glad he was arrested for. I have little patience for "Ole Miss drivers". 20+ over speed limit

It's a dumb mistake but not malicious. He shouldn't be suspended for a single play.

At least we have RB that has little fear & hits the hole hard.

Dawgology

This is a relatively innocuous charge but probably a really good learning moment for Hil. Especially if the CL is putting it on the front page. Now, if the CL did front page the shoplifting then they are just carrying on as usual. I don't know, I haven't bought one of them or opened their site in over 2 years.

Short story: I would rather he learn this lesson over reckless driving than stealing something.

Hey bearsharts. Does this bring perspective to The NCAA and Sherman marching on the plantation?

Most people and programs only go 5-10 mph over speed limit, sometimes getting a warning or minor ticket. When you continuously drive recklessly you are bound to get arrested at some point.

Got to live and learn from these little incidents. Also is the term 'arrested' correct? Usually they impound your vehicle and you can get someone to pick you up. Shouldn't it be more like 'ticketed' for Reckless Driving?

Hopefully Hill is the type of person who will be embarrassed by this so he can learn from his mistake(s). I'm glad he was arrested. I see too many reckless drivers acting as if they are the only people on the road, and now that I have an infant riding around with me it really grinds my gears. Save the recklessness for the football field.

And so what begins? This doesn't even warrant a 1 game suspension. Almost 100% of teenagers have tried this at least once. It is a serious deal with concerns to safety, and perhaps he needs a good talking to. Maybe get him to watch one of those Ogrish videos on the aftermath of car crashes, where the victim's brains are smeared all over the interior. If that won't get you thinking about safety, nothing will.

I'm just happy Joel T is not letting Bonner's legacy die.

I think he's the guy that "was just doing his job" when Elih Marrero got a DUI and he reported it even though he has been off of the team for weeks.

The excuse from the media people was "he's on the MSU roster on the Internet". I thought it was pretty unnecessary.

You are correct 1bigdawg..... C-Liar has always proven discrimination between MSU and tsun. Anything negative against MSU and our team/players is always covered on the rags front page. Always has been... always will be....

That being said... it is sad that MSU doesn't address this issue and allows it to continue...
Om had two arrested on shop lifting charges... that is a felony.... We will watch to see what the Oxford judge gives them in comparison... Nothing will hit the front page against them....

Reckless driving, found in Miss. Code 63-3-1201, is when a person drives any vehicle in such as manner as to indicate either a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. It is punishable as a first offense of a fine up to $100. A second offense could be 10 days in jail and a fine up to $500.

Pretty sure if you own a car that will do 120mph, a 100.00 ticket is no big deal. Pretty sure I read that there are zero points for first offense.

Everyday. It's almost as bad as DUI. If you are reckless driving you are putting other people in danger not just your self. Like with a DUI we don't care how drunk you get, just stay home. When you get in the car you are putting other people's lives in danger and that's the problem.
And I do not think he should be punished in anyway by anybody other than his parents if they are still footing his bills. It's a traffic ticket. No big deal.

LC Dawg

Couple of thoughts on this:
- If you give a kid a car that will do 120 he will do 120 in it.
- He should be punished in some form by Mullen because he was arrested and that reflects on MSU football. Mullen will handle this.
- The only punishment that will really get a kid's attention for something like this is to take away his car and/or license. Teenage boys are stupid and think they are bulletproof. My son was with a kid that was clocked at 130 when they were in high school. Law came down pretty hard on the driver because he was a juvenile. Took his license for a year. I thought that was excessive but it damn well got his attention.

Yeah we will see. Mullen is notorious for holding this type of stuff against young players by withholding playing time.

I really hope he takes the approach and attitude that the kid made a kid mistake.. let's move forward..

I pretty much agree with DM's approach of no suspension l,but my guess is that Hill will get a cold shoulder from him during the first game. However, damn that is dangerous going so fast, and it could have ended in tragedy for him and others.
As far as Luke suspennding two of his players for shoplifting, one of my Ole Miss friends viewed the punishment as being excessive, and when taken at face value, it is. After taking over from Freeze on short notice, Luke had to send a message, and send it he did. Good call on his part.
Now, everyone please drive safely, pay for stuff, and play football.

I had a car that would surpass 120 and never did higher than 80 in it on interstate. So no, a kid will not always do what a car will allow. Some kids just use what God put between their ears and understand consequences of such actions for oneself and the others around you.

Young and thought I was bulletproof, 113 mph on my Honda 350 - 2 cylinder (high handle bars and sissy bars of course!) sunny afternoon on my way to Oktibbeha County Lake my Jr year at State in 1976. July 5, 1987, 2 A.M., Highway 7 out of Holly Springs, trying out my newly purchased 1979 'vette at 137 mph, older, much less bulletproof, but still pretty dumb. I think it would have hit the 140 on the speed-o but my partner and I saw headlights in the distance. I still have the vette today, but that was the 1st and last time to see 137. Still kick it in occasionally, but haven't see three digits in many years.
