MSU has implemented a new policy concerning Golf Carts..... YET, does NOT have space for those using the golf carts that are ADA/Handicapped.... Any comments..... on where a golf cart parking area should be?

http://hailstate.com/news/2017/4/27/football-mississippi-state-university-announces-new-golf-cart-restrictions.aspx

Using Golf Carts probably save at least 100 parking spaces for cars and NOW a golf cart must have a parking place also....

When there are not enough parking spaces as it is..... NOT GOOD MSU....

THEN where is MSU going to locate more ADA parking? MSU doesn't have enough parking for the students (20,000) much less ball game weekends. MOST "OTHER" Sec Universities use other means to move people around the university and the towns... Bama moves people from University mall to the campus by bus. I sent an email... will be interesting to see IF I get a reply.....

Their answer is going to be " Park in any lot you have a pass for or one of the $20 pay lots and call for a University cart to come pick you up".

They already run shuttles from downtown and the research park. You can also call from any university parking lot and they will come pick you up by golf cart.
These were the problems I was told:

1. Lack of insurance
2. Underage drivers
3. Atv's
4. People going around baricades and driving into conjested pedestrian areas.

You cannot get a parking pass for golf carts -- there are no spaces... You are put on a waiting list... MSU has no idea when there will be an parking spaces available.... We ride from home and YES, it is street legal....

We ride from Home and golf cart was purchased Street Legal, tagged and has insurance....
Pedestrians walking down the middle of the streets instead of the side walks is an issue for all areas. Drinking and driving is an issue for many that tailgate. I presented areas that would make perfect golf parking spaces. I will post the response from MSU about the specific areas. When and IF I receive a response..... As far as the research park parking ($20.00).... You pay for parking... When they are using MSU/City shuttles that are free down town and funded through grant money and use the same buses...... (psst... They even asked me IF I lived in Starkville)

I agree that MSU does need to do something for our fans that have mobility issues on game day. I wish I had a good solution for that. Hopefully MSU will do just that before this season starts.

Also, Scott Field is not very ADA compliant with those gigantic steep ramps that even healthy me can barely walk up into the stadium. They probably get a pass since the thing was built in the 30's though.

The RVs will be next to be pushed off campus. The university wants those spots for car parking because they can make more money. Its just a matter of time.

There have been multiple wrecks over the past 5 years between vehicles and golf carts being driven by a 10 year old. Little johnnie getting the keys from mom or dad to joyride or get something from the car is the dumbest thing i could think of when i'm on campus 7 saturdays every fall. 2 wrecks last year, that I am absolutely positive of. It's a good thing to get those off of the street. Maybe mommy and daddy will have to find a sober driver besides their child who can't see over the steering wheel.

As far as helping elderly and handicapped, MSU has been running escorts of golf carts for years and that ain't stoppin. There are handicap spots that can be utilized and there are elevators inside the stadium.

Damn it yall love to bitch about things that are stupid. If you can't make it around campus or up to your seat without assistance and don't want to walk, except because of a disability, stay home or get in shape to walk for that 20 minutes too and from your car.

When my grand daughter was 9 months old we carried her UP those steps... I asked and was moved down toward the bottom of the stadium because I could not carry her.... and I have a grandson and am THANKFUL we still have those same seats... MSU East side bathrooms are NOT to ADA Code and they know it
It would be nice to just get the paving/ walk area resurfaced... under the East side of the Stadium....

Use of golf carts is not saving spaces.

Most people with golf carts are not parking their vehicles on campus... They park down East Lee and drive in. Thus saving spaces on Campus. Now they tell us there are no more ADA parking spaces... We have been allowed to park next to the gate at the Stadium and now... We will see. I have NOT received a response as of now. I was asked IF I lived in Starkville or not.... Punishing individuals after the fact does practically nothing to prevent future accidents or lessen the ever increasing safety issues golf carts pose under the current extremely lax rules relative to the rest of the conference. It sucks that these changes are impacting your longstanding gameday routine and experience, but it shouldn't be hard to see that they're necessary for the greater good. You can hand out bans all you want, but you'll never be able to stop idiots from being idiots.

1. I have been attending Mississippi State Athletic events since I was old enough to walk around without my parents having to tote me everywhere we went. That was approximately 1990, or around age 5.

2. Where were the Parents and ban them from campus with a motorized vehicle? Bans don't work. There are around 15000 cars that drive around campus each day during school and FAR more than that on a football game. To add to that, the number of police/EOG/sheriffs/etc. is no where near the number you would need to check to make sure "Banned Vehicles" were no longer there.

And the parents are drunk or not paying attention. They are probably looking for a ride to the stadium provided by MSU.....

Just like during the day on Campus... you hit a "walker" you are responsible.... everyone knows this... EVEN if they step out in front of you and NOT at a crosswalk. This also applies at game times. People need to use the sidewalks... walking in the middle of the street is NOT the place to walk.

1990..... One day you "YOUNG ONES" will get to be our age. As your last statement says..... the parents are probably drunk -- which is an entirely different issue that the "powers at be" refuse to address because they are just as guilty... I promise this year I will report the drinking in the stands for sure.... and should I see it outside while we tailgate I will report it also.... I have had to listen to a drunk person for several years.... not any more....

1. This decision was made about safety and the incidents that proved it to be a problem over time. Parking services did NOT implement this. Your question, if not posed to the people quoted in the article is misdirected.

2. Some park down east Lee. Not nearly most.

3. ADA space availability is a separate issue that is being worked on every day at msu. But there is a finite amount of space no matter how many more people show up.

3. Many complaints have been made about the carts being in proximity to pedestrians after games. From fans. And from people who have been injured by them.

As for the question about whether you live in Starkville, there are services in and around the Starkville area that provide transportation for area residents who have disabilities but you have to be registered for them and qualify.

If you have questions about this and live in the Starkville area I suggest you start by asking any one of the number of disabled residents who these transit providers help. They make it every day ....game or not.

Outside of that, this all seems to boil down to being dissapointed that a vehicle designed to operate in the street isn't allowed an exemption to operate where cars cannot.

The Cart is Street READY, with tag and insurance... MSU made the policy that you must have a place to park YET, do not have anymore ADA Handicap parking spaces to accommodate these people. There are NO MORE parking spaces PERIOD..... from what the ticket office told me this morning... So the 175 new parking spaces are full already? The use of golf carts has kept many vehicles off campus where there are still no parking places. MSU has problems with parking during the day much less during game times/weekends...... Pedestrians should be walking on the side walks but many cannot walk on them due to the drunks.... standing and drinking with open containers.... Sir, you have been here long enough and you know this has been a problem for years. NOTHING NEW... I hope to see certain MSU employees also walking.... instead of driving a MSU golf cart.... and these are NOT Game Day Employees. When I do, I will be sending emails... as these people pull up and park beside us in an MSU golf cart.

I agree with requiring all carts to be street legal & requiring license and insurance. I don't agree with requiring them to park in the parking area which are already full. Designate an area in a grass area & help ease parking! Also not right to charge them as much as a car due to size- parking for rv's is more than cars because of size now. I haven't seen any problem seeing them park on the north side of stadium during football games or in the outfield at Dudy Noble. That would ease parking for everyone

At the ultimate end of this still resides the reason for the rule. Driving any vehicle, street legal or not, anywhere other than the street and parking them anywhere other than a legimate space presents a safety hazard to everyone. Ada patrons are not exempt from bein in danger or causing it but are provided services in accordance with their disabilities to take their needs into account. But just as space is a finite thing, so are resources to regulate that space. If you've been a fan since the early 80s you've seen the size of the football and baseball facilities both double in size. The student body has too. Starkville has increased by 10,000. What has not doubled in size is the area in which to put students and fans during a game. If now 100,000 attend games during school in the same space 50-60 k did before then perhaps the problem is not policy or even price.

It's physics. Golf carts present a larger problem as space dwindles. As I say often in my line of work only 5 lbs of sugar will fit in a 5lb bag no matter how badly you want that 6th lb in there.

Grass areas once used for parking are infeasible to regulate and repair and impossible to manage in inclement weather.

This is the growing pain of reaching a critical mass of effective space.

Nothing screams safe like a golf cart going around a barricade and driving on closed roads around the stadium.

As someone who has personally had to deal with golf carts on a gameday (and not be driving one), I like the new rule. I've spoken with my sources on site and they're happier with it too. Limits the liability of the University in this case. For those ADA patrons, there are free university shuttles that are constantly running on campus and from the aforementioned areas off campus. All you have to do is call Parking and request a shuttle cart at your lot and they'll dispatch one directly to your location. They also provide the same shuttle service after games. Right now with the attendance at games growing, limiting the liability of the university is key right now. All it takes is one incident involving a runaway golf cart to change the whole atmosphere on a gameday. Would you rather it be like at Alabama where there are no golf carts allowed on campus at all? Because that's more than likely the next step if people don't get it through their heads that this is a serious safety issue.

Like it or not, things are changing.

What state should do is sale passes for golf carts like they do student parking but charge 20,000 with an extra 10,000 deposit if you get caught breaking the rule per season for the pass. This way you could still have one on campus if you got the money. Also give two matching decals one with the owners photo and the other on the cart. If pulled over both must match or forfeit 10,000 deposit. Problem solved and there are some money loaded suckers out there who would spend the money and sooner or later break the rule and get caught. That some extra jack to help build the new baseball stadium.

Also if they want more then one driver who can drive that cart on campus sell extra 20,000 dollar pass and require an additional 10,000 dollar deposit.

Golf carts are a problem (and I have one). I don't really like the new policy, but I can accept it. I understand the reason for the ban.

Alcohol is an even bigger problem, and I always enjoy a cold barley pop or two or three or four on campus while tailgating. It's pure hypocrisy for the university to tolerate it though while cracking down on golf carts..

Truth be told, beer isn't the main problem. It's the hard stuff that makes folks obnoxious, belligerent, dangerous arseholes in the stands during the game and around campus afterward. Yet I can put a bottle of bourbon in my club level locker and it's all good. That's a stupid policy in my opinion.

I believe I'll give up my 10 season tickets including 2 club tickets - I already pay to much & now to charge me $175 to park a golf cart! I'll watch @ home and save my $7800 a year to the bulldog club & cancel my 4 tickets to the baseball expansion & watch for free on tv!!! Could have just let us park on the grass & saved all this problem! Somebody has 0 common sense! Typical MSU!

I'm talking about kids driving the golf cart and not paying attention and being hit by OTHER CARS.......on the road........because they shouldn't be driving....... You're right. Walkers should be on sidewalks, and people under 16 shouldn't be driving anything, and golf carts are dangerous when they are on streets being surrounded by vehicles that are 3-4 times the size of the golf cart.
