True story:

When people refer to British people as, "Limeys" it comes from the practice of the Royal Navy in the 1850's to add lemon and/or lime to the grog they'd serve their sailors. They understood that adding Vitamin C would help combat scurvy. By the 1880's people started calling all Brits, not just sailors, Limeys as a result of this practice.

Ironically, when they used lemons instead of limes, the Royal Navy had the healthiest sailors in the world. When they switched primarily to limes, the incidence of scurvy went back up. Turns out lemons have enough Vitamin C, while limes don't.
